BMW Group operates a sizeable Information Technology (IT) division in South Africa, which develops and maintains software for the German automotive giant’s global operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Established in 2014, the South African BMW IT Hub has grown from 134 employees to roughly 2,500, with employees working on digital solutions used in more than 100 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is the largest of six hubs outside of BMW’s German IT operations. The others are located in Brazil, China, India, Portugal, and Romania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By strategically spreading its software teams across different time zones, BMW can facilitate continuous 24\/7 software development and update cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The South African hub operates out of two locations. Its headquarters is in Menlyn, Pretoria, but a portion of staff work at the BMW Midrand campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So-called “Hubsters” work with both leading-edge technologies and legacy systems, programming languages, and frameworks. The hub hosts experts in various technologies, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cloud \u2014 Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Data science \u2014 Python, R, Hadoop<\/li>\n\n\n\n
SAP Solutions \u2014 SAP MM, VMS, S4\/Hana<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
The hub also has the only User Experience and User Interface Design unit outside of the German design team based in Munich. The unit is focused on the visual and utilitarian components of BMW’s software. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The South African hub collaborates with prestigious local universities such as Stellenbosch University for skills development. As of 2025, the hub had over 20 staff with PhDs in various fields. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The hub helps develop vehicle software for powertrain, advanced driver assistance systems, and infotainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Entities like BMW IT Hub are expected to play an increasingly important role in the automotive sector, with software-defined vehicle experiences becoming a major industry trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the hub’s recent work is helping to build the new “Superbrains” architecture and Operating System X used in BMW’s Neue Klasse vehicles, starting with the much-anticipated iX3 electric SUV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A key component of this was the South African hub’s leadership in BMW’s digital twin technology, which is used to simulate both the production process and on-road vehicle operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
