{"id":64766,"date":"2012-11-17T23:40:47","date_gmt":"2012-11-17T21:40:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=64766"},"modified":"2012-11-17T23:42:53","modified_gmt":"2012-11-17T21:42:53","slug":"poor-broadband-holding-back-tv-multichoice-exec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/64766-poor-broadband-holding-back-tv-multichoice-exec.html","title":{"rendered":"Poor broadband holding back TV: MultiChoice exec"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The biggest constraint for <a title=\"MultiChoice\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/216214-MultiChoice\">MultiChoice<\/a> to provide \u201cTV everywhere\u201d in Africa has been the speed and cost of broadband, <a title=\"Aletta Alberts\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/288167-Aletta-Alberts\">Aletta Alberts<\/a>, head of content at MultiChoice told attendees at a <a title=\"Discovery Networks\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/483062-Discovery-Networks\">Discovery Networks<\/a> panel discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Discovery Networks was unveiling their new research report entitled \u201cThe Rise of the TV Everywhere Audience\u201d at an event on Johannesburg on Tuesday (13 November 2012), where Alberts was a panelist.<\/p>\n<p>Alberts said that she believes many people in management in the TV industry think fast, affordable broadband in South Africa is 5\u20137 years away, but she thinks it\u2019s 2 years away.<\/p>\n<p>To substantiate her view, Alberts said that Dimension Data indicated in meetings with her that they believe fibre connections will be common in urban South Africa in 2 years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_64618\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64618\" class=\"size-full wp-image-64618\" title=\"Aletta Alberts portrait\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Aletta-Alberts-portrait.jpg\" alt=\"Aletta Alberts\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Aletta-Alberts-portrait.jpg 200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Aletta-Alberts-portrait-54x75.jpg 54w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Aletta-Alberts-portrait-101x140.jpg 101w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Aletta-Alberts-portrait-181x250.jpg 181w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-64618\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aletta Alberts<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Internet Solutions, a subsidiary of <a title=\"Dimension Data\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/249886-Dimension-Data\">Dimension Data<\/a>, previously predicted that fibre-to-the-building connections would be a common occurrence in 2\u20133 years and would pave the way to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/56927-fibre-to-the-home-will-happen-in-sa-is.html\">more pervasive fibre-to-the-home connections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alberts went on to say that she always finds it fascinating that something like Big Brother Africa generates the amount of online interaction it does in spite of the continent\u2019s broadband constraints.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do only put the shower scenes online,\u201d Alberts added to much laughter. She explained that they can\u2019t broadcast even implied nudity in some countries, which is why the shower scenes are online and not broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>Another aspect in which the Internet has changed broadcasting, Alberts said, is that social media has become the new electronic programme guide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone are the days that broadcasters recommend content to viewers,\u201d Alberts said.
