The platform is powered by Sentech’s Freevision Play over-the-top (OTT) platform.

“In a defining moment for the African media industry, Afree TV today announced its official launch, introducing a bold, unified platform designed to take African content to the world,” Sentech said.

“Afree TV is more than a streaming service. It is a continental collaboration bringing together African broadcasters and content owners to amplify the continent’s stories on a global stage.”

The streaming service is a free ad-supported television service, meaning viewers can watch for free but will be subjected to periodic ads.

“Powered by the Freevision Play OTT platform, Afree TV removes traditional barriers to distribution and enables audiences everywhere to discover the richness of African content,” Sentech said.

According to Sentech, the platform officially launched at the end of April 2026 and offered four live TV channels, including LN247, SportsCast Africa, Homebase, and Millennium TV.

Viewers who missed live content on these channels can still access recent episodes and shows after they aired through the Catch-up feature.

However, as of Friday, 15 May 2026, the Catch-up feature only appeared to apply to programming that aired on the LN247 news channel.

While it also offered a range of live radio channels, most of the platform’s content was available in video-on-demand.

As of Friday, 15 May 2026, the platform listed 51 programmes available on-demand, including Bounded in Love, Osuru, FLEE, Black Petals, and Officer of Love.

Sentech launched Freevision Play, the platform powering Afree TV, in June 2024. The platform was designed to provide South African residents with free access to select local TV and radio channels.

All the streaming services you can watch for free in South Africa

Afree TV has joined a growing list of free streaming services available to South African residents. In addition to Freevision Play, there are at least 11 other streaming services available for free.

The expansion of free streaming services in South Africa has enabled residents without access to TV to access important content on other devices, provided they have an Internet connection.

Those looking for free local content have numerous options to choose from, including AfriforumTV, select channels on DStv Stream, eVOD, SABC+, Viu, or cAfrica.tv.

AfriforumTV has angled its core programming towards Afrikaans reality TV. However, it has also broadcast news, school sports, documentaries, lifestyle shows, and general entertainment.

While limited in free channels, MultiChoice-owned DStv Stream has allowed users to watch some channels without an active DStv subscription. These include Al Jazeera, eNCA, and Channel O.

EMedia’s eVOD was one of the first free streaming services to launch in South Africa and offered various soaps and dubbed Telenovelas that are broadcast on E-tv.

Free users also have access to eVOD original movies and several older Hollywood films, and can upgrade to eVOD Premium to access newer movies and TV shows.

South Africa’s public broadcaster has relaunched its free streaming service, SABC+, at least twice. Viewers can access live local TV channels and catch-up episodes of local soaps and series.

Based in Hong Kong and launched locally in 2019, Viu has offered viewers limited SABC content, as well as older Hollywood movies and TV shows.

Launched in 2024, cAfrica.tv is another ad-supported free streaming service available to South African viewers. It describes itself as a hub for African and international streaming content.

It also claimed to offer the largest collection of African and international entertainment, including music, movies, TV shows, documentaries, podcasts, and geographical content.

There are five free streaming services available to viewers in South Africa that don’t focus on local content. These include Rlaxx TV, RugbyPass TV, Twitch, and YouTube.

Service

Content

Afree TV

Live and on-demand TV and radio content from the African continent.

AfriforumTV

Including news, school sports, documentaries, lifestyle, Afrikaans reality TV, and general entertainment.

cAfrica.tv

African and international content, including on-demand video.

DStv Stream

Several free channels, including Al Jazeera, eNCA, and Channel O.

eVOD

Various soaps and dubbed Telenovelas aired on E-tv, as well as on-demand eVOD Original movies and several older Hollywood movies.

FreeVision Play

Local radio and TV channels

Rlaxx TV

A range of international channels, such as Comedy Dynamics, Thrill One, and Gusto TV, as well as channels more specific to the region.

RugbyPass TV

On-demand rugby-related content

SABC+

Live local TV channels broadcast on free-to-air television, as well as catch-up episodes of popular soaps and TV shows.

Twitch

User-created live streams covering a vast range of topics, including gaming, music, fitness, etc.

Viu

Limited range of SABC content, older Hollywood hits, and international content from Turkey, Korea, Scandinavia, and other markets.

YouTube

Large catalogue of user-generated content covering a vast range of topics

[24
105283,88200,71342,55614,95477,96857,2760
post-647891","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadcasting","tag-afree-tv","tag-dstv-stream","tag-evod","tag-free-streaming","tag-freevision-play","tag-sabc-4","tag-sentech
