{"id":648054,"date":"2026-05-18T10:18:39","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T08:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=648054"},"modified":"2026-05-18T10:50:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T08:50:13","slug":"bolt-electric-taxi-cabs-launched-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/motoring\/648054-bolt-electric-taxi-cabs-launched-in-south-africa.html","title":{"rendered":"Bolt electric taxi cabs launched in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The South African arm of Estonian ride-hailing giant Bolt announced on Monday the launch of an electric vehicle (EV) category for the local market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It followed a partnership with YugoRide to deploy a fleet of 500 EVs in Cape Town by December 2025, with a broader expansion to Johannesburg planned soon after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By comparison, Bolt South Africa\u2019s major rival, Uber, launched its EV category, Uber Go Electric, in South Africa in November 2025, initially with only 70 vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By January 2026, Uber had expanded its vehicle fleet in its EV category to 280, which is still shy of Bolt\u2019s 500 EV promise by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch is Bolt\u2019s first official foray into EVs in South Africa. It features the electric vehicle category in more than 70 cities worldwide, including in Nigeria and Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caroline Wanjihia, Regional Director, Rides Africa &amp; International Markets at Bolt, said that South Africa was one of the company\u2019s most important global markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe launch of our EV category reflects our long-term confidence in the country\u2019s mobility future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believe electric mobility presents an important opportunity not only from a sustainability perspective, but also from an economic one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wanjihia said that the new category presents a good option for drivers to lower their operational costs and potentially create more sustainable earnings opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFollowing our EV initiatives in Kenya and Nigeria, South Africa represents an important next chapter in Bolt\u2019s broader African EV strategy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolt established a strategic fleet partnership with ride-sharing platform YugoRide to roll out the first of its EVs in Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William Huang, co-founder of YugoRide, said it was aiding Bolt with more than vehicles, helping build its EV infrastructure and operational support \u201cfrom the ground up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe recognised that if South Africa\u2019s transition to electric mobility was going to succeed, it required more than just vehicles,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The YugoRide fleet partnership introduced a structured EV fleet model in Bolt South Africa, which is focused on operational quality, driver support and safe ride-hailing experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bolt launches EV category for riders and drivers in Cape Town<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Bolt-EV-launch-1200x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-648057\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Bolt-EV-launch-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Bolt-EV-launch-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Bolt-EV-launch-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Bolt-EV-launch-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Bolt-EV-launch.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolt representatives told MyBroadband that the EV category is now live for users of the Bolt app in Cape Town, allowing riders to begin requesting rides with electric vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Availability is expected to increase over time, as more EVs are onboarded onto the platform and join the category.
