The technology is built directly into a smartphone’s motherboard.

The technology also allows users to have multiple profiles at once, easily switching between them in their devices’ system settings. Often, devices support two SIMs being active at the same time.

In an announcement, Truecaller said the launch marked its move into mobile data services, adding consumables to its portfolio and expanding beyond caller ID and spam protection.

South Africa was one of 29 countries worldwide that Truecaller earmarked for the travel e-SIM launch, designed to cover travellers who don’t want to pay for costly mobile roaming.

“The launch lands at a moment when South Africans have never needed a trusted communications brand more,” the company said.

According to its Global Insights Report, South Africa ranked 9th globally for spam call intensity, with nearly 30% of all unknown calls flagged as spam. A problem, it said, was accelerating.

“Q1 of 2026 saw South Africans receive 8.72 billion spam calls, with 3.33 billion spam calls recorded in March alone — a 34% year-on-year increase,” Truecaller explained.

“Travel eSIM extends that protection to one of travel’s most vulnerable moments: arriving in an unfamiliar country, disconnected, and reliant on whoever reaches you first.”

Plans for Truecaller’s e-SIMs range from 1GB of data over 7 days to 20GB over 30 days, with activation in the app in minutes, the company said.

Truecaller is offering affordable data bundles for the e-SIM, including R25 for 1GB of data across 3 days, R65 for 5GB across 7 days, and R125 for 10GB across 14 days.

The e-SIMs have global coverage, but travellers must purchase the data bundles before they depart. The bundles will still provide Internet access at their destinations.

“With our scale, we can offer a great product at a competitive price,” said Fredrik Kjell, COO at Truecaller. “Today marks the first step in offering adjacent communication products to our massive user base.”

Truecaller establishes local presence in South Africa

Mmathebe Zvobwo, Truecaller Director for Market Development in South Africa.

The launch of the travel e-SIM by Truecaller followed the establishment of an official presence in South Africa in March, part of a broader move to diversify its global business beyond its traditional markets.

The Swedish company appointed Mmathebe Zvobwo as the Director of Market Development in South Africa, who was first involved in helping Truecaller understand its South African user base.

“Contrary to popular belief, we don’t have data on users.
