Private security companies and homeowners in South Africa have rapidly deployed artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart cameras to detect criminals and prevent break-ins in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These systems have enabled security providers to transition from traditional, reactive monitoring to predictive analytics, enabling them to stop more crimes before they happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While private security firms have used CCTV cameras for a long time, such systems required monitoring by a dedicated guard or control room at just the right time to catch criminals in the act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, for homeowners, their primary benefit had been collecting evidence or information following an incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Integrating AI detection software into these systems enables them to detect people or potentially significant events within their field of view, similar to off-the-shelf smart cameras. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Axon Security<\/a>, CCTV and AI surveillance systems significantly reduce human error and bias through advanced algorithms and deep learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This ensures more objective and consistent security monitoring, promptly identifying and addressing potential threats,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to recent research from the University of South Africa’s Tladi Maja and Kris Pillay, smart camera systems have enabled the analysis of vast data streams to automatically flag unusual activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of these systems were designed to recognise faces and number plates and detect anomalies in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“AI-powered CCTV systems are used to automatically flag unusual activities, reducing the need for manual monitoring and enabling quicker response times,” the researchers said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“AI-powered surveillance systems can automatically detect unusual activities or unauthorised access,
reducing the need for human monitoring and increasing response efficiency.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples of local AI-powered CCTV software systems include AVLytics and GhostHome, which target the different layers of the South African security ecosystem to ensure proactive crime prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These two companies took two different approaches to AI-powered home security cameras and the rapid deployment of response teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GhostHome adopted a premium, end-to-end ecosystem approach to home and estate security in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It designed its systems to use a combination of visible-light cameras and thermal imaging technology, allowing cameras to detect human movement through complete darkness, rain, fog, or smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to its website, customers have benefited from professional-grade cameras installed at strategic positions around their homes’ perimeters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GhostHome’s AI monitors home security cameras 24\/7 and classifies every movement on a property in real time, whether it’s a person, a vehicle, or an animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once a threat is detected, GhostHome provides the contracted armed response company with HD evidence, a description, clothing details, vehicle information, and direction of travel within five seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It designed the system to use advanced behaviour tracking to spot intruders attempting to hide or crawl, and it also features a late-night “Night Focus” window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “Night Focus” window has enabled verified members to monitor community networks through GhostHome’s smartphone app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bull Security operations manager French Jooste previously told MyBroadband that his firm used AVLytics’ services to enable AI detection capability on many of the older cameras it oversees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AVLytics has followed a different approach to GhostHome. It doesn’t sell directly to users or homeowners. Instead, it sells directly to registered security installers and monitoring firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It designed a third-party plug-in device to retrofit millions of older, traditional “dumb” analogue and IP camera systems, converting them into advanced AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It achieved this through its Artificial Mind Engine (AME), a location-aware cognitive computing programme designed specifically for video streams with a physical module deployed on site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The firm does not rely on cloud processing due to connectivity bottlenecks and data costs in South Africa, guaranteeing instantaneous threat analysis even if the home’s main Internet connection drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
