He had been stewarding the Sequoia partnership since 2017, when he led the firm’s US and European business.

Botha joined the investment firm in 2003 and is credited with spearheading its investments in YouTube, Instagram, biotech firm 23andMe, and software company MongoDB.

His stepping down wasn’t a complete exit. He will transition to a new role of advising the partnership and will represent the firm on the boards of its portfolio companies.

He is the grandson of South Africa’s longest-serving foreign minister, Pik Botha, and the son of economist Dr Roelof Botha, with whom he shares a name.

Born in Pretoria in September 1973, Botha was raised in Cape Town after his family moved to Hout Bay early in his childhood.

In Cape Town, Botha attended Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck and flourished academically. After never speaking English at home, he was set on attending an English university to enable him to move overseas.

He swiftly moved into finance after graduating from the University of Cape Town with a BSc in actuarial science, economics, and statistics.

The young Botha landed a job as a business analyst at consulting firm McKinsey & Co. in Johannesburg and worked there for a few years.

At the time, Botha said he was reading about what was going on in Silicon Valley and was set on challenging himself against the world’s best and riding the wave of the internet.

After two years at McKinsey, Botha enrolled at Stanford University for an MBA and graduated at the top of his class. Job offers flooded in after that.

One immediately stood out. After rejecting two offers, Botha was introduced to Elon Musk by a mutual friend, after which the X.com founder convinced him to join the fledgling startup.

Making Pals with Elon Musk

Peter Thiel and Elon Musk in the early days of PayPal

Musk thought traditional banks were outdated and set out to disrupt them, launching X.com as an online financial services company.

In 2000, X.com merged with Confinity to form PayPal, and the wheels began to fall off. Musk preferred the name X.com, while most employees preferred PayPal.

Musk’s management style became increasingly intense, prompting a group of employees to persuade the board to oust him as CEO and bring back Peter Thiel.

Botha would feel a similar sting 25 years later when a group of employees also agitated for him to be replaced as Sequoia’s steward, also citing an imperious management style.

However, following the merger, Botha rose to become PayPal’s CFO — and he did so by asking for the opportunity when the board was looking for someone to take the company public.

“In 2001, we needed a CFO to take the company public, and the board endeavoured to do an outside search,” Botha recalled during an interview for the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Rather than looking outside the company, at the age of 27, Botha asked the board to consider him for the role, which he said was a daunting prospect.

“But nobody is an authority on your potential but you, and at some point, you’re going to have to raise your hand and not be timid and ask for the opportunity,” he said.

At the age of 29, during the dot-com bubble, Botha was overseeing the financial operations of a billion-dollar company and led it through its IPO in February 2000.

PayPal was soon sold to eBay for $1.5 billion, making Botha a millionaire overnight. Former PayPal CEO Meg Whitman made him an offer to stay, which he turned down to join Sequoia.

“Meg offered me an incentive package to stay as the CFO at PayPal, which ended up being worth $20 million, and I turned that down,” he said.

“Sequoia offered me a cash salary that matched what I was earning at PayPal at the time with nothing else. No bonus, no carry. He said the label matters because it describes the mechanic.

“It is software produced through natural-language iteration rather than line-by-line authorship. Development in this mode is, by nature, iterative. The shape of an application shifts with each prompt.”

Botha said MongoDB had an advantage in this new era, as an application’s database had to bend as quickly as the developer’s intent.

“It was built for exactly the kind of fluid, evolving data model that prompt-driven development produces — and it has been compounding that advantage
