it said.

“By working closely with our Internet service provider partners, we aim to accelerate fibre adoption and ensure that more households and businesses can participate fully in the digital economy.”

Telkom has extensive infrastructure and lower risk

Jordan Toy, director at Legacy Family Wealth

Speaking to BusinessDayTV, Toy explained that while Telkom was substantially smaller than Vodacom and MTN in terms of market cap, it had a significant advantage through Openserve.

He said Telkom was approximately a tenth of the size of Vodacom and MTN in terms of market capitalisation.

He also noted that MTN and Vodacom had extensive operations in Africa, while Telkom remained heavily focused on South Africa.

“Size-wise, Telkom is not in the same space from a market cap perspective. It is not playing in the same space as a Vodacom or an MTN,” Toy said.

However, he said that Openserve positioned Telkom as a good prospect for the future, considering its advantage in terms of kilometres of infrastructure in the ground.

“They have Openserve sitting within Telkom. It’s got the most kilometres of fibre in the ground in South Africa,” Toy said.

“While Vumatel, which is the main sort of competitor and passes more houses, Openserve still has tens of thousands more kilometres in the ground in that space. So, that’s a good option for the future.”

Moreover, he said there is generally less risk associated with an investment in Telkom, considering its competitors’ challenges in other African markets.

“Every four or five years we hear about MTN and issues out of Nigeria where it’s not being able to repatriate their funds out of the country and currency volatility issues,” Toy said.

As a result, an investment in Telkom was lower risk than an investment in Vodacom and MTN. However, Toy cautioned against picking telecoms players that were cheaper on a trading basis.

“I think it’s whether telecom utilities as a whole offer that long-term compounding growth power, and I’m not necessarily convinced on that,” Toy said.

Telkom share price chart for the year-to-date

Financial advisory Legacy Family Wealth believes Telkom offers a good growth opportunity for investors.

[80335
105579,105580,67250,33997,42,33386,109,41
post-650629","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-investing","tag-jordan-toy","tag-legacy-family-wealth","tag-mobile-network-operators","tag-mobile-networks","tag-mtn","tag-openserve","tag-telkom","tag-vodacom
