{"id":650767,"date":"2026-05-29T09:06:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T07:06:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=650767"},"modified":"2026-05-29T10:00:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T08:00:11","slug":"spacex-rivals-rocket-explodes-during-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/science\/650767-spacex-rivals-rocket-explodes-during-test.html","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX rival&#8217;s rocket explodes during test"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Blue Origin\u2019s New Glenn rocket exploded in a massive fireball while undergoing a test on a Florida launchpad Thursday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development is a major setback to the Jeff Bezos-backed firm in its efforts to challenge a dominant SpaceX. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASASpaceflight\/status\/2060164928472854821?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">preparing the vehicle<\/a>\u00a0for its fourth launch, which was slated to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/blueorigin\/status\/2059676643875049654?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deploy a batch of satellites<\/a>\u00a0for Amazon.com\u2019s Leo, a rival satellite network to SpaceX\u2019s Starlink. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of the satellites were on the rocket when it exploded, a spokesperson for Amazon said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a post on X, Blue Origin&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/blueorigin\/status\/2060172114796204539?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;the rocket experienced an \u201canomaly\u201d during the test. All personnel have been accounted for and are safe, the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Glenn, which is key to Blue Origin\u2019s plans for space exploration, is years behind schedule and has faced longer-than-expected waiting periods between flights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The explosion is the latest blow to its reputation as a reliable alternative to SpaceX\u2019s Falcon 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Blue Origin rocket is set to serve a key role in NASA\u2019s Artemis program, which aims to send humans back to the Moon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this week, NASA awarded Blue Origin a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-26\/nasa-taps-bezos-blue-origin-firefly-for-moon-base-contracts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lucrative contract<\/a>\u00a0to land rovers on the Moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the space agency will work with its partners to support a \u201cthorough investigation\u201d of the incident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA will provide any information on the impacts to the Artemis and lunar programs as it becomes available.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpaceflight is unforgiving, and developing new heavy-lift launch capability is extraordinarily difficult,\u201d Isaacman said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nasaadmin\/status\/2060186268772835475?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post<\/a>&nbsp;on X.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches, said it is aware of the failure and there was no impact on air traffic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The test was not within the scope of FAA licensed activities, the agency said, referring further questions to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New Glenn rocket is also one of an elite group of vehicles that is supposed to deliver the most critical US national security satellites to orbit for the Pentagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Second major failure in two months<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Blue Origin&#39;s New Glenn just blew up at LC-36 while attempting to Static Fire ahead of NG-4.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tANS0dWyIH\">https:\/\/t.co\/tANS0dWyIH<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PztxFoBqIw\">pic.twitter.com\/PztxFoBqIw<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NSF &#8211; NASASpaceflight.com (@NASASpaceflight) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASASpaceflight\/status\/2060164928472854821?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 29, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Blue Origin recently launched New Glenn on its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-19\/bezos-blue-origin-launches-new-glenn-rocket-with-ast-satellite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">third flight<\/a>\u00a0in April.
