The most affordable was the standalone 400GB fixed-LTE Internet plan priced at R469 on a 24-month contract with a router.

Bundled options with DStv Compact and DStv Premium were priced at R829 and R1,329 per month, respectively.

MyBroadband asked Canal+ why it had discontinued the three more affordable plans, but it did not provide feedback by the time of publication.

Launched in September 2021, DStv Internet initially debuted with three fixed-LTE data products providing 50GB, 220GB, and 470GB data.

The data allocations were split equally for daytime and night-time use on the first two packages, while the top-end plan was split between 220GB anytime and 250GB night-time data.

The most affordable 50GB plan with 25GB daytime and 25GB night-time was priced at R229 per month on a 24-month contract. The price was cut to R199 at one point.

DStv Internet added fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) products in October 2022, with prices starting at R549 for an uncapped 25/10Mbps package.

Like with its fixed-LTE plans, it also offered FTTH and DStv bouquet bundles, which MyBroadband found offered good value for money compared to buying the products separately.

However, the fibre service was quietly discontinued for new users in late 2024, before being terminated completely in January 2025.

MultiChoice told MyBroadband it paused fibre sales to focus on its fixed-LTE offerings, as it found these were best suited to its customers’ needs.

Big data traffic driver

A selection of DStv Internet packages available in 2025.

According to MultiChoice’s last annual results before its takeover by Canal+, DStv Internet was showing strong growth. In the year ending March 2025, subscribers increased by 45% while revenue grew 85%.

MultiChoice said the broad range of fixed-LTE products was ideal for customers wanting reliable, straightforward connectivity to stream their favourite DStv shows and live sport.

Third-party analysis also suggested DStv Internet was immensely popular. The fixed-LTE products run on MTN’s network through a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO).

According to a presentation by Mobile Virtual Network Enabler founder and CEO Yaron Assabi, the service accounted for 9% of monthly data traffic on MTN’s MVNO platform.

That meant DStv Internet was not only MTN’s biggest MVNO but also one of the mobile network’s largest customers by data consumption.

Assabi said that DStv Internet was offering customers amazing value. “It’s completely distinct, and it resonates with them as they require big data packages to stream content,” Assabi said.

The reduction in DStv Internet plans is a strange move, given that the service appeared to be performing well. One possibility is that the most popular or profitable plans were the top-end offers.

MyBroadband’s previous comparisons showed the entry-level offerings did not compete well with packages from the likes of Axxess and Afrihost.

The 400GB anytime data plan is sufficient for many hours of streaming and offers much better value for money on a per-GB basis than the discontinued plans.

Canal+ has also expressed a clear intention to simplify DStv’s product offering and focus more on its core entertainment businesses.

<figure
