{"id":65576,"date":"2012-11-27T09:58:19","date_gmt":"2012-11-27T07:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=65576"},"modified":"2012-11-27T16:51:58","modified_gmt":"2012-11-27T14:51:58","slug":"telkom-voip-mess","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/65576-telkom-voip-mess.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom VoIP mess"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Voice over IP (<a title=\"VoIP\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227062-VoIP\">VoIP<\/a>) providers in South Africa are not impressed after people calling certain numbers from <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227037-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a>\u2019s network could not make a successful call.<\/p>\n<p>One industry player, who asked to remain anonymous because of his close ties to Telkom, explained that Telkom had big issues last week when they were sending calls from their network to ported numbers (hence numbers which were moved from Telkom to a VoIP provider).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen anyone called from a Telkom line to a ported number, the recipient would be met with one way speech. The caller would hear the person they called, but the recipient would not hear caller,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband confirmed that this problem affected numerous South African VoIP operators, including many prominent providers like Nashua Communications.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Andy Openshaw\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/486772-Andy-Openshaw\">Andy Openshaw<\/a>, MD of Nashua Communications, confirmed that they experienced sustained call quality issues on the Telkom network. \u201cMany of our customers and partners were affected,\u201d said Openshaw.<\/p>\n<p>Openshaw said that, according to a source in the industry, the problem was related to the upgrade of equipment in Telkom&#8217;s IP network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue appears to be related to poor planning and a lack of change control processes at Telkom \u2013 this is a concern given the critical nature of its IP network.
