Naspers<\/a> announced its half-year financial results today (27 November 2012), reporting the addition of 187,000 subscribers to DStv<\/a> in South Africa between March and September 2012.<\/p>\n

According to the media giant, DStv now reaches 4.2-million households in the country.<\/p>\n

Naspers said that 87% of the subscriber growth came from the Compact bouquet, which it said benefited from the satellite broadcaster’s local content offering.<\/p>\n

In the financial results presentation, Naspers also stated that this growth was impacted by the \u201cEasyview cleanup\u201d, involving 32,000.<\/p>\n

Personal video recorder (PVR) sales also increased by 90,000, DStv reported, with the cumulative base now at 747,000 households.<\/p>\n

The BoxOffice service, which lets PVR subscribers rent movies on-demand, reached monthly movie rentals of 400,000. Naspers noted that BoxOffice was recently made available online, but didn\u2019t say what the difference in rental numbers are between the online and PVR-based rental service.<\/p>\n

Naspers showed in its financial presentation that DStv\u2019s 13% year-on-year increase in subscribers has translated to a 16% increase in revenue (excluding intergroup adjustments) and a 19% increase in trading profit.<\/p>\n

The trading margin also increased from 32% to 33% between September 2011 and September 2012.<\/p>\n

This is in spite of a 21% increase in programming cost between September 2011 and September 2012, as well as increases in other costs such as development spend and capital expenditure.<\/p>\n
