{"id":65648,"date":"2012-11-27T16:55:06","date_gmt":"2012-11-27T14:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=65648"},"modified":"2012-11-28T08:00:14","modified_gmt":"2012-11-28T06:00:14","slug":"telkom-voip-mess-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/65648-telkom-voip-mess-explained.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom VoIP mess explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227037-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> says that issues with its voice Softswitches and a codec mismatch were to blame for call cut-offs and one-way speech problems for voice calls to South African Voice over IP (<a title=\"VoIP\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227062-VoIP\">VoIP<\/a>) providers.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous Voice over IP (VoIP) providers in South Africa complained that when anyone called from a Telkom line to a ported number last week, the recipient would be met with one way speech. \u201cThe caller would hear the person they called, but the recipient would not hear the caller,\u201d one industry player explained.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous large VoIP providers, including <a title=\"Nashua Communications\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/487232-Nashua-Communications\">Nashua Communications<\/a> and <a title=\"Internet Solutions\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226430-Internet-Solutions\">Internet Solutions<\/a>, confirmed that the Telkom problems affected their subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>VoIP providers said that, while they were aware of the problems, the lack of communication from Telkom is of concern.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wayne Speechly\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/278899-Wayne-Speechly\">Wayne Speechly<\/a>, communication services executive at Internet Solutions, said that the company has not been given any information around the source of issue or what was done to rectify it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChallenges and issues of this nature are not good for the industry at large as it brings about uncertainty in the minds of end-users. Inevitably, technology and problems are synonymous, however it is imperative that we can understand what issues occur, why they occur and what has been done to circumvent this in the past,\u201d said Speechly.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_65650\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/65648-telkom-voip-mess-explained.html\/attachment\/wayne-speechly\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-65650\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65650\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65650\" title=\"Wayne Speechly\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wayne-Speechly.jpg\" alt=\"Wayne Speechly\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wayne-Speechly.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wayne-Speechly-100x66.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wayne-Speechly-185x123.jpg 185w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wayne-Speechly-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-65650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wayne Speechly<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Andy Openshaw\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/486772-Andy-Openshaw\">Andy Openshaw<\/a>, MD of Nashua Communications, said that the issue appears to be related to poor planning and a lack of change control processes at Telkom. \u201cTelkom runs backbone network and interconnection services for most of the operators in the SA market,\u201d said Openshaw.<\/p>\n<p>Another VoIP provider said that his company had poor responses from Telkom and that he lost lots of business because of this issue. \u201cThis equates to anti-competitive behavior,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Telkom explains VoIP problems<\/h3>\n<p>Telkom explained that on Monday 19 November, call cut-offs and one-way speech problems were detected in its network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelkom\u2019s technical personnel at its Network Operations Centre quickly isolated the fault that was attributed to a failure in a front-end periphery element in one Telkom\u2019s voice Softswitches,\u201d said Telkom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalls affected were across the spectrum of voice traffic that passed through this particular Softswitch and not partial to any one provider. The fault was rectified shortly thereafter; restoring stability to the network completely by Wednesday 21 November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubsequently, further diagnostics indicated a codec mismatch that continued causing one-way speech to a VoIP provider.
