Mary Meeker<\/a>, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers<\/a>, presented her report on the \u201c2012 Internet Trends Year-End Update\u201d, revealing Internet growth trends, mobile trends and the impact of the Internet on society.<\/p>\n

This presentation is an update on Meeker\u2019s 2012 Internet Trends research which focused on global Internet stats, business models associated with mobile and social online environments and economic trends related to the Internet.<\/p>\n

In the updated report Meeker added a new supplemental section focused on Asset-Light Generation and discusses new areas of re-imagination \u2014 from Data, Wallet, Education and Healthcare.<\/p>\n

Strong mobile growth<\/h3>\n

Meeker said that while Internet growth remained robust, mobile adoption is the area which will show the biggest growth in future.<\/p>\n

According to Meeker\u2019s report there are currently 2.4 billion Internet users globally with a year on year growth rate of 8%. This growth is mainly driven by emerging markets.<\/p>\n

The report further showed that there are currently 1.1 billion global smartphone subscribers with an annual growth rate of 42%.<\/p>\n

Meeker\u2019s research shows that South Africa is currently ranked 22nd globally when it comes to the number of smartphone subscribers, with 11 million subscribers.<\/p>\n

The report further highlighted that global mobile traffic is rapidly increasing. According to Meeker global mobile traffic as a percentage of total Internet traffic increased by over 1,000% over the last three years.<\/p>\n
