{"id":667348,"date":"2026-09-12T23:00:24","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T21:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=667348"},"modified":"2026-09-12T23:00:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T21:00:27","slug":"easyequities-informs-customers-about-possible-data-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/667348-easyequities-informs-customers-about-possible-data-breach.html","title":{"rendered":"EasyEquities informs customers about possible data breach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>EasyEquities has sent customers an email notifying them that one of its third-party service providers may have experienced a data breach or leak which affects them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs part of our client verification process, EasyEquities uses a third-party service provider to conduct verification checks in line with regulatory obligations,\u201d the online trading platform said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are writing to inform you that this third-party service provider has experienced a cybersecurity incident potentially affecting customer information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EasyEquities said an immediate forensic investigation by the third-party service provider has commenced to determine the nature and extent of the incident and the information that may have been affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can confirm that we are working closely with the third-party service provider as their investigation continues,\u201d EasyEquities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEasyEquities takes cyber-security threats seriously and upon receiving notification of the cyber security incident, we have conducted our own internal security checks across all entities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said its internal investigation found no evidence that any EasyEquities or Purple Group systems were compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has also been no impact on customers\u2019 account security or their ability to invest. EasyEquities said it had not yet received the final findings of the third-party investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce we receive a final investigative report from the third-party service provider, we will provide further communication if necessary or required,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The notification from EasyEquities follows <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/667328-south-african-bank-notifies-customers-of-data-breach.html\">Bidvest Bank\u2019s very similar notification<\/a> to its customers about a cyber incident at a third-party service provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It did not reveal what data was potentially exposed or which provider was breached, saying only that it held \u201climited categories\u201d of Bidvest Bank data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe service provider has confirmed that Bidvest Bank data was held in the affected environment and should be treated as potentially affected,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe extent of any access to that data has not yet been established, and an independent forensic investigation is continuing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bidvest Bank said its own banking systems have not been affected and that customer accounts and banking services were operating normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do not yet know which clients may be affected. As soon as we do, we will contact those clients directly. We would rather tell you this now than wait until we have a complete picture,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EasyEquities and Bidvest Bank customers advised to be on guard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Bidvest-Bank.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-667329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Bidvest-Bank.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Bidvest-Bank-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Bidvest-Bank-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While neither EasyEquities nor Bidvest could yet provide customers with any details, they offered general advice on precautions they should take in the meantime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a precaution, please remain alert to any unsolicited emails, calls or messages claiming to be from any unknown entity or EasyEquities that request personal or account information,\u201d EasyEquities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you are contacted directly by anyone claiming to hold your data as part of this incident, please do not engage and let us know immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both companies warned customers not to click on suspicious links or share details with unknown parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBe alert to anyone contacting you about this. Criminals use incidents like this to approach people while they are concerned,\u201d Bidvest Bank said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNever share your PIN, password or OTP. Bidvest Bank will never ask you for these \u2014 not by phone, not by SMS, not by email. Anyone who asks is not us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also said customers should never move money because someone tells them to. It will never ask customers to transfer funds to a \u201csafe account\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf in doubt, end the conversation and call us yourself on the number printed on your bank card or statement.
