{"id":667360,"date":"2026-09-13T09:12:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-13T07:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=667360"},"modified":"2026-09-13T09:12:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-13T07:12:19","slug":"cell-c-warns-fibre-customers-about-possible-data-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/667360-cell-c-warns-fibre-customers-about-possible-data-breach.html","title":{"rendered":"Cell C warns fibre customers about possible data breach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Cell C has notified customers who use its fibre Internet service provider that their data may have been compromised in a possible data breach or leak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are writing to inform you that on 9 September, a third-party service provider that supports parts of our Cell C Fibre customer environment reported a cybersecurity incident,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe service provider has advised that they have identified that their access credentials were compromised, resulting in certain customer records being accessed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said that, based on the information available, the affected records were limited to customer names, email addresses, mobile numbers, and Cell C customer account numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur investigations are ongoing, and any change to this position will be communicated,\u201d Cell C told fibre customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cell C said it immediately activated its incident response procedures upon becoming aware of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCell C is working with the third party and its cybersecurity specialists to contain the risks and investigate the matter,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The notification from Cell C <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/667348-easyequities-informs-customers-about-possible-data-breach.html\">follows similar notifications<\/a> from EasyEquities and Bidvest Bank to their customers about a cyber incident at a third-party service provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs part of our client verification process, EasyEquities uses a third-party service provider to conduct verification checks in line with regulatory obligations,\u201d EasyEquities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are writing to inform you that this third-party service provider has experienced a cybersecurity incident potentially affecting customer information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said its internal investigation found no evidence that any EasyEquities or Purple Group systems were compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has also been no impact on customers\u2019 account security or their ability to invest. EasyEquities said it had not yet received the final findings of the third-party investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/667328-south-african-bank-notifies-customers-of-data-breach.html\">Bidvest Bank did not reveal<\/a> what data was potentially exposed or which provider was breached, saying only that it held \u201climited categories\u201d of customer data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Affected customers should be on guard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cell-C-header.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-663839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cell-C-header.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cell-C-header-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cell-C-header-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cell-C-header-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Cell-C-header-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While none of the impacted companies could provide customers with much detail about the possible breach, they offered general advice on precautions they should take in the meantime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cell C said the possible consequences of the incident include unsolicited contact by individuals pretending to represent Cell C, financial institutions, retailers, or other trusted organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They could also receive phishing emails designed to obtain additional personal information, as well as fraudulent SMS messages (smishing) containing malicious links or requests for information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Customers could also face increased scam telephone calls seeking to persuade them to disclose passwords, one-time passwords (OTPs), or other sensitive information, Cell C warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, they could experience increased marketing, spam, or unwanted communications if unauthorised parties misuse their personal contact details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBe aware that the information may be used to market products to you.
