{"id":66813,"date":"2013-01-01T12:45:38","date_gmt":"2013-01-01T10:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=66813"},"modified":"2013-01-01T12:47:01","modified_gmt":"2013-01-01T10:47:01","slug":"sa-based-projects-funded-on-kickstarter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/66813-sa-based-projects-funded-on-kickstarter.html","title":{"rendered":"SA-based projects funded on Kickstarter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of South Africans and entrepreneurs that wanted to do a project in South Africa managed to successfully fund their ideas using Kickstarter during 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Kickstarter is a website that lets its users \u201ccrowdsource\u201d funding for their projects from other users.<\/p>\n<p>The site infamously only provides lists of successful projects, and four South African cities are listed on the site as places tagged in successfully funded projects.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, one successfully funded project had located itself in Durban, Cape Town had 7 funded projects, and Johannesburg had 3. Pretoria is also listed, but 2010 was the last time it saw a successfully funded project.<\/p>\n<p>The SA-based projects listed as successfully funded by Kickstarter during 2012 are as class=\"wp-caption-text\">UN Climate Negotiations film-makers<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Help Make Epic Movies from the UN Climate Negotiations<\/h3>\n<p>A group of 8 young people consisting of videographers, photographers, writers and producers crowdsourced enough money to complete their work on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/393118693\/help-our-team-finish-video-documentary-shorts-from\" target=\"_blank\">UN Climate Negotiations<\/a> that were held in Durban.<\/p>\n<p>None of the team hailed from South Africa, however, with people from Kenya, India, the Netherlands, and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The project was successfully funded on 10 January 2012.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Folk Told Me: Audio\/Visual G<\/h3>\n<p>On 18 March 2012 Jazzmen Lee-johnson, a New Yorker, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/869888319\/folk-told-me-audio-visual-g\" target=\"_blank\">successfully raised the money<\/a> he asked for to \u201cconceive\/compose\/record\u201d a concept album with the Johannesburg-based band \u201cFolk Told Me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He described their sound as \u201ca combination of black folk\/indigenous music mixed with hip-hop, rock, electronica and jazz.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66831\" style=\"width: 574px\" for two years before moving on to Brooklyn, New York successfully funded their project, Abalimi, on 27 April 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Abalimi, which the film-makers say is a word meaning \u201cfarmers\u201d, is described as \u201ca film about Xhosa women in the townships of South Africa micro-farming to fight extreme poverty, gain health, and create food security.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66829\" Tajdin successfully funded her film concept on 12 May 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The film is to be shot on location in Cape Town and features <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/projectleila\/walls-of-leila\" target=\"_blank\">Leila, who is forced to come to terms with an intricate racial tapestry of family and a new-found Hope <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/megdaniels\/restorative-justice-rehabilitating-south-africas-y\" target=\"_blank\">uses restorative justice<\/a> to rehabilitate society\u2019s Africa<\/h3>\n<p>Russian journalist Ksenia Mardina landed up in Johannesburg and decided she wanted to stay on and start up an urban magazine for the city called Gummie, which was successfully funded on 29 July 2012.<\/p>\n<p>She describes it as an online magazine about people, places and events in the \u201cGotham City of Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing the website still said and now lives in Venice, California, successfully funded his \u201cHunters\u201d photography book on 10 September 2012.<\/p>\n<p>According to Chancellor, the book explores \u201cthe complex
