A number of South Africans and entrepreneurs that wanted to do a project in South Africa managed to successfully fund their ideas using Kickstarter during 2012.<\/p>\n

Kickstarter is a website that lets its users \u201ccrowdsource\u201d funding for their projects from other users.<\/p>\n

The site infamously only provides lists of successful projects, and four South African cities are listed on the site as places tagged in successfully funded projects.<\/p>\n

In 2012, one successfully funded project had located itself in Durban, Cape Town had 7 funded projects, and Johannesburg had 3. Pretoria is also listed, but 2010 was the last time it saw a successfully funded project.<\/p>\n

The SA-based projects listed as successfully funded by Kickstarter during 2012 are as follows:<\/p>\n

\"UN

UN Climate Negotiations film-makers<\/p><\/div>\n

Help Make Epic Movies from the UN Climate Negotiations<\/h3>\n

A group of 8 young people consisting of videographers, photographers, writers and producers crowdsourced enough money to complete their work on the UN Climate Negotiations<\/a> that were held in Durban.<\/p>\n

None of the team hailed from South Africa, however, with people from Kenya, India, the Netherlands, and the United States.<\/p>\n

The project was successfully funded on 10 January 2012.<\/p>\n

Folk Told Me: Audio\/Visual G<\/h3>\n

On 18 March 2012 Jazzmen Lee-johnson, a New Yorker, successfully raised the money<\/a> he asked for to \u201cconceive\/compose\/record\u201d a concept album with the Johannesburg-based band \u201cFolk Told Me\u201d.<\/p>\n

He described their sound as \u201ca combination of black folk\/indigenous music mixed with hip-hop, rock, electronica and jazz.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Abalimi\"

Abalimi<\/h3>\n

Film-makers that lived in Cape Town for two years before moving on to Brooklyn, New York successfully funded their project, Abalimi, on 27 April 2012.<\/p>\n

Abalimi, which the film-makers say is a word meaning \u201cfarmers\u201d, is described as \u201ca film about Xhosa women in the townships of South Africa micro-farming to fight extreme poverty, gain health, and create food security.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Walls

Rhodes graduate Amirah Tajdin successfully funded her film concept on 12 May 2012.<\/p>\n

The film is to be shot on location in Cape Town and features Leila, who is forced to come to terms with an intricate racial tapestry of family and a new-found romance.<\/a><\/p>\n

Voices of Yabonga<\/h3>\n

25 South African kids (from the townships of Gugulethu and Lower Crossroads near Cape Town), 12 songs, 4 college students (from the US), all working together to produce 1 CD.<\/p>\n

Voices of Yabonga<\/a> was successfully funded on 12 May 2012.<\/p>\n

\"Restorative

Restorative Justice – Rehabilitating South African Youth<\/p><\/div>\n

Restorative Justice: Rehabilitating South Africa\u2019s Youth<\/h3>\n

Another project about South Africa by a foreigner, Meg Daniels\u2019 project was successfully funded on 13 May 2012 and will document how South Africa\u2019s School of Hope uses restorative justice<\/a> to rehabilitate society\u2019s vulnerable youth.<\/p>\n

\"Postick\"

Postick<\/p><\/div>\n

POSTICK – Adhesive labels that convert things into postcards<\/h3>\n

Tatjan Buisson from Cape Town successfully funded her idea to turn \u201call sorts of things\u201d into postcards<\/a> on 19 June 2012.<\/p>\n

\"HIV

HIV Research in South Africa<\/p><\/div>\n

HIV Research in South Africa<\/h3>\n

Duduzile Phindi Mashinini, a South African educated in the USA, successfully funded her Kickstarter project on 20 June 2012.<\/p>\n

She explained that the project is an extension of a former accomplished and published project researching HIV risk among Black teachers in South Africa.<\/p>\n

\"Gummie\"

Gummie<\/p><\/div>\n

GUMMIE: first urban magazine in Johannesburg, South Africa<\/h3>\n

Russian journalist Ksenia Mardina landed up in Johannesburg and decided she wanted to stay on and start up an urban magazine for the city called Gummie, which was successfully funded on 29 July 2012.<\/p>\n

She describes it as an online magazine about people, places and events in the \u201cGotham City of Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time of writing the website still said \u201cComing in 2012\u201d.<\/p>\n

A photograph from Hunters<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cHunters\u201d a photography art book by David Chancellor<\/h3>\n

David Chancellor, who was born in England and now lives in Venice, California, successfully funded his \u201cHunters\u201d photography book on 10 September 2012.<\/p>\n

According to Chancellor, the book explores \u201cthe complex relationship that man has with animal in sub-Saharan Africa, through the eyes of the tourist trophy hunter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Rollaball\"

Rollaball<\/p><\/div>\n

ROLLABALL – skate soccer!<\/h3>\n

Eddie Edwards, Steven Markovitz, Shelley Barry, and Stephen Cheifitz successfully funded their project on 22 September 2012 to make a film about skate soccer – a sport played by sufferers of polio in Accra, Ghana.<\/p>\n

The project is listed under Johannesburg, South Africa on Kickstarter and involves South Africans.<\/p>\n
