Aspiring engineers and architects at a Chatsworth high school have had their learning programme boosted by state-of-the-art technology from the provincial Department of Education.<\/p>\n
Meadowlands Secondary, whose pupil body is largely disadvantaged, is one of five schools in the province to receive Computer-Aided Design (CAD) facilities valued at R200000.<\/p>\n
CAD is the use of computer technology to assist in the design and drafting of engineering equipment and buildings.<\/p>\n
Meadowlands Secondary School in Montford, which is the only school in Chatsworth to offer subjects such as mechanical, civil and electrical technology, was chosen because of its popular technical courses. <\/p>\n
The other four schools are waiting until software arrives from the department before they start using the equipment.<\/p>\n
Meadowlands principal Steven Pillay is pleased that his school was selected by the education authorities.<\/p>\n
“It’s an honour to have this technology. The exciting part is that this technology is a huge motivation for the pupils,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Here is a wonderful opportunity for them to take advantage (of new technology), especially now that the country is crying out for engineers and skilled people.”<\/p>\n
Pillay said the CAD system was equipped to deal with engineering graphics and design (EGD), beneficial for aspiring engineering pupils. <\/p>\n
EGD covers the drawing component of technical drawing.<\/p>\n
“If a pupil wants to go into the engineering field or architecture, then they need to do EGD. This system will give them a start in a tertiary institution.” <\/p>\n
Pillay believes the CAD system will give pupils a strong grounding for careers in engineering.<\/p>\n
He said pupils flocked to his school because of the technical courses.<\/p>\n
“Due to its technical nature, pupils from outside this area attend. They attend the school because the curriculum is streamlined. We now have subjects such as mechanical technology. This will take pupils to mechanical engineering if they want to pursue it further,” he said.<\/p>\n
Grade 12 pupil Dhesan Pillay said he was “incredibly excited” that the school had received new technology.<\/p>\n
“I love technical drawing and this will make it so much better. It’s nice to start the year like this,” he said.<\/p>\n
