{"id":71454,"date":"2013-02-28T23:43:04","date_gmt":"2013-02-28T21:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=71454"},"modified":"2013-03-01T14:50:19","modified_gmt":"2013-03-01T12:50:19","slug":"termination-rate-cuts-who-will-drop-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/71454-termination-rate-cuts-who-will-drop-prices.html","title":{"rendered":"Termination rate cuts: who will drop prices?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a>, <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226943-MTN\">MTN<\/a>, and <a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/213919-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> have no intention to reduce their voice call rates in the wake of the last round of termination rate cuts required by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (<a title=\"ICASA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226385-ICASA\">ICASA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The new rates kick in on 1 March 2013 and among other things, the peak and off-peak costs of terminating a call on a mobile network will be made equal, and reduced to 40c.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Vodacom<\/h3>\n<p>Questioned about the third and final set of cuts specified in the current glide path, Vodacom explained that mobile termination rates (MTRs) are a source of net revenue for them.<\/p>\n<p>This means that a reduction in the rate has a negative effect for Vodacom, a spokesperson told MyBroadband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our last financial year, the cuts introduced in that period reduced pre-tax profits by almost R400 million,\u201d Vodacom said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn other words, there won\u2019t be savings from the latest cuts to pass on to our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\" style=\"background-color: #f4f4f4; font-weight: bold; color: #fff;\">\n<td><\/td>\n<td><strong>Peak<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Off-peak<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>01-Mar-11<\/td>\n<td>R0.73<\/td>\n<td>R0.65<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>01-Mar-12<\/td>\n<td>R0.56<\/td>\n<td>R0.52<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>01-Mar-13<\/td>\n<td>R0.40<\/td>\n<td>R0.40<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">MTN<\/h3>\n<p>MTN said that they would like to place on record that they will implement the rate cut, but said that interconnection rates are not directly linked to lower retail voice rates \u201cdespite the unrelenting claims to this effect that is being played out in the media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Robert Madzonga\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/343371-Robert-Madzonga\">Robert Madzonga<\/a>, chief corporate services officer at MTN SA said that MTN has dramatically decreased rates since the MTR regulations were implemented in March 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only have call durations increased but the capability of customers spending more time on calls for the same spend has increased,\u201d Madzonga said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Cell C<\/h3>\n<p>Cell C said that its 99c\/minute call rate structure was implemented in anticipation of the 40c termination rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther reductions in our retail tariffs will not be made as a direct consequence of the 1 March 2013 MTR decline,\u201d Cell C said.<\/p>\n<p>The mobile network operator went on to say that the further narrowing of the MTR asymmetry offered to smaller operators on 1 March 2013 significantly harms Cell C and reduces the prospect of us making further reductions in our retail tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>According to the regulations, asymmetry of 10% is allowed, meaning Cell C can ask larger operators 44c to terminate calls on its network.<\/p>\n<div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\" style=\"background-color: #f4f4f4;
