The controversial Free State Online website has been down for a large part of Tuesday (5 March 2013) \u2013 a day after the news broke that the provincial government spent million on this and related websites.<\/p>\n

The Sowetan newspaper reported on Monday (4 March 2013) that the Free State provincial government spent R140 million on its website, running on the open source WordPress platform.<\/p>\n

The Free State provincial government hit back, explaining that a total of 38 websites, and not only one, form part of the Free State\u2019s multi-year integrated website project.<\/p>\n

Spokesman Mondli Mvambi said that the total project of 38 websites would cost R24 million in the 2011\/2012 finance year, and would cost R23.8 million in the 2012\/13 finance year.<\/p>\n

Since the news emerged, it has been challenging to access the Free State Online website, which is experiencing very slow loading times. The website was completely down for a large part of Tuesday.<\/p>\n

MyBroadband tried to contact Cherry Online Design – the company behind the design of the Free State Online website – for feedback about the website problems; however, the company\u2019s phone lines were engaged.<\/p>\n

When contacted on Monday, the company said it would not answer questions about the website, saying that all questions should be directed at the Free State provincial government.<\/p>\n
