{"id":7214,"date":"2009-03-07T14:35:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-07T12:35:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-03-07T14:35:00","modified_gmt":"2009-03-07T12:35:00","slug":"ie8-not-forced-on-windows-7-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/7214-ie8-not-forced-on-windows-7-users.html","title":{"rendered":"IE8 not forced on Windows 7 users"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft said on Friday that a control panel in its next-generation computer operating system will let users shut off Internet Explorer 8 and other built-in programs. <\/p>\n<p>The news comes less than two months after the European Commission sent Microsoft a Statement of Objections accusing the US software giant of unfairly tying Internet Explorer (IE) to Windows. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;In Windows 7 we are&#8230;giving customers more control, flexibility and choice in managing the features available in this version of Windows,&quot; Microsoft documents and printing team group program manager Jack Mayo wrote in an engineering blog post. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;For any of the features listed you can change the state to enable it or disable it.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Opera Software filed a complaint with the commission in 2007 accusing Microsoft of denying Windows users &quot;a real choice of browser.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Mozilla, maker of the popular Firefox browser, has also objected to the bundling of IE with Windows. <\/p>\n<p>Google came out with its own browser, Chrome, last year and recently weighed in on the commission&#8217;s complaint against Microsoft, calling the IE dominated browser market &quot;largely uncompetitive.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>A Windows Features control panel will let users place check marks indicating which programs they want enabled and turn applications off by leaving boxes blank, according to Mayo. <\/p>\n<p>Applications on the list include Windows Media Player, Search, and Internet Explorer 8, according to Microsoft. <\/p>\n<p>Programs that are turned off will remain on computers because some software is shared between applications, according to Mayo. <\/p>\n<p>The commission has said it may order Microsoft to give Windows users a clear and easy choice of Web browsers, even allowing customers to disable IE. <\/p>\n<p>The commission and Microsoft have long clashed over the Redmond, Washington-based company&#8217;s practice of bundling other software such as media players into Windows. <\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has until mid-March to respond to the browser charges and can request an oral hearing to state its defence. <\/p>\n<p>According to figures from January from the internet research firm Net Applications, IE had a total browser market share of 67.5%. <\/p>\n<p>Firefox was next with 21.53%, followed by Apple&#8217;s Safari with 8.29% and Chrome with 1.12%. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=161280\"><strong>Windows 7 and IE8 discussion<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft said that a control panel in Windows 7 will let users shut off Internet Explorer 8<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7214","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-software"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7214"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7214"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7214\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7214"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7214"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7214"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
