MTN<\/a> will be charging an additional subscription fee to access its Long Term Evolution (LTE<\/a>) network, though the network was not able to give an indication of what it will cost at this stage.<\/p>\n

Both Vodacom<\/a> and MTN itemise LTE as a \u201cvalue added service\u201d (VAS) on their deal sheets, but MTN\u2019s general manager for product, innovation, and development, Mike Fairon<\/a> said that they want the subscription to be visible to the customer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a fully penetrated service,\u201d Fairon said, explaining that they want to give customers the flexibility to opt for the service.<\/p>\n

The VAS will be free for the first three months so customers can test LTE, and Fairon said that subscribers will be able opt out and not pay the additional subscription should they no longer want it.<\/p>\n

Vodacom was asked whether they simply bundle an additional VAS subscription with their LTE contracts, but chief consumer officer Phil Patel<\/a> said that their LTE services are charged exactly the same as normal data.<\/p>\n

Any additional cost when comparing contract prices for LTE and non-LTE models of the same device comes down purely to the higher cost of an LTE version of that device, Patel said.<\/p>\n
