{"id":74002,"date":"2013-03-25T09:03:41","date_gmt":"2013-03-25T07:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=74002"},"modified":"2013-03-25T13:28:03","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T11:28:03","slug":"seacom-and-eassy-problems-adsl-isps-respond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/74002-seacom-and-eassy-problems-adsl-isps-respond.html","title":{"rendered":"Seacom and Eassy problems: ADSL ISPs respond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Multiple submarine cable systems across Africa, the Middle East and Asia are affected by cable breaks which are believed to have been caused by a large vessel dragging its anchor across the sea bed.<\/p>\n<p>Two cable systems serving South Africa \u2013 <a title=\"Seacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227005-SEACOM\">Seacom<\/a> and <a title=\"Eassy\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/216377-EASSy\">Eassy<\/a> \u2013 have been affected by the cable breaks in the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Seacom CEO <a title=\"Mark Simpson\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/361756-Mark-Simpson\">Mark Simpson<\/a> said on Saturday that the company continues to work to restore transmission and getting restoration services turned on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, this process is proving much more complex and taking longer than we were initially told by our suppliers and would have expected,\u201d Simpson said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Local ADSL providers give feedback<\/h3>\n<p>Many South African ADSL service providers use Seacom and Eassy for international connectivity, and many local broadband users continue to complain about slow international throughput.<\/p>\n<p>Most service providers have already re-routed traffic to alleviate the effects of the cable breaks, but capacity limitations may influence the performance of some subscribers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28744\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/28738-surprising-r1-adsl-deal-from-afrihost.html\/attachment\/brendan_gian_greg_peter\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28744\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28744\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28744\" title=\"brendan_gian_greg_peter\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/brendan_gian_greg_peter.jpg\" alt=\"Afrihost\" width=\"600\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/brendan_gian_greg_peter.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/brendan_gian_greg_peter-100x44.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/brendan_gian_greg_peter-185x82.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28744\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Afrihost: Brendan Armstrong, Gian Visser, Greg Payne, Peter Meintjes<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Afrihost\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/307435-Afrihost\"><strong>Afrihost<\/strong><\/a> director <a title=\"Greg Payne\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/301349-Greg-Payne\">Greg Payne<\/a> said that the Seacom issues are not affecting Afrihost&#8217;s network at all as they only use Seacom as a backup.<\/p>\n<p>However, Afrihost uses the Eassy cable which forced the ISP to re-route traffic over WACS while the circuit is down.<\/p>\n<p>Afrihost CEO <a title=\"Gian Visser\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/301335-Gian-Visser\">Gian Visser<\/a> added that there has been a phenomenal take up of the monthly \u2018free GB offer\u2019 over the last few days. \u201cPeople seem to be using it as a backup measure if their ISP has problems,\u201d said Visser.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_69288\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/69282-telkom-uncapped-price-cuts-isps-respond.html\/attachment\/derek-hershaw-mweb-isp-ceo\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-69288\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69288\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69288\" title=\"Derek Hershaw - We have done this by taking capacity on both WACS and SAT-3,\u201d said Fialkov.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are therefore impacted by the Seacom outage, but not that severely. We have compensated by reducing P2P and software update throughput during business hours. Business customers should experience very little difference in their service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Internet Solutions\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226430-Internet-Solutions\"><strong>Internet Solutions<\/strong><\/a>, said that international DSL traffic has been diverted through the alternative international cable systems, predominantly SAT3 and WACS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIS traffic was not restricted to Seacom before this outage, therefore, although users will experience some increase in latency, this will be minimal,\u201d IS said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis small increase in international latency is the extent to which the IS user base has been impacted by the Seacom outage.
