The updated model will run on the new 3.0 iPhone firmware and will also include a faster processor.

According to rumours this increased capability would come from a new Infinion chipset. Presumably this would have to be a drastic upgrade from the current Infineon chipset that supposedly caused 3G reception issues at an earlier stage in the iPhone’s life. There have, however, been whisperings of a 7.2Mbps iPhone for some time now among industry insiders such as MacRumours.com.

If this were indeed the case then it would be good news for MTN and Vodacom subscribers. Both mobile providers have been 7.2Mbps-capable for months but have yet to enable this service due to a lack of transmission capacity.

Both MTN and Vodacom have plans to implement 7.2Mbps HSDPA by mid-year which should coincide perfectly with the new iPhone release if the rumours are proven to be true.

The new iPhone is also likely to be shipped with a greater memory capacity. Current models are offered in either the standard 8GB format or the high-end 16GB format. Insiders at AT&T have said that the upgrade would see the high-end model offered with 32GB storage capacity, making it a far more lucrative proposition.

A need for increased memory has been a common request among international users as a result of the drop in storage prices over the past year. It would be only natural therefore for the iPhone to retain its price point while offering a greater storage capacity.

AppleInsider have also mentioned that the new iPhone will include a video camera which would support the evidence of video publishing screenshots that have been found in iPhone 3.0. Although users have found the publish button in the “MobileMe” application more of a dud button than anything else it does hint towards video publishing for the iPhone in the near future.

Discuss the new iPhone

[14

post-7431","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cellular
