{"id":74395,"date":"2013-03-29T09:05:44","date_gmt":"2013-03-29T07:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=74395"},"modified":"2013-03-29T09:10:41","modified_gmt":"2013-03-29T07:10:41","slug":"tech-spend-outlook-trimmed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/74395-tech-spend-outlook-trimmed.html","title":{"rendered":"Tech spend outlook trimmed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Industry research firm Gartner trimmed its tech spending outlook for 2013 because concerns about the U.S. budget and Cyprus&#8217; debt burden are expected to temporarily weigh on financial plans.<\/p>\n<p>It now expects spending on information technology ranging from smartphones to data storage to grow 4.1 percent or $3.8 trillion this year instead of the previously forecast 4.2 percent, Gartner said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison in 2012, IT spending rose 2.1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The research firm said it had changed its forecast because federal budget cuts in the United States and Cyprus&#8217; debt issues had &#8220;netted out any benefit&#8221; from positive developments such as the U.S. avoiding the so-called fiscal cliff of tax hikes and deep spending reductions at the end of last year.<\/p>\n<p>However, Gartner said, the concerns are expected to be short-lived.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The market is already in a pessimistic state,&#8221; said Gartner analyst John Lovelock. &#8220;This hasn&#8217;t changed the dial much but there will likely be a pause in some spending.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That could mean delaying the purchase of new mobile devices for example but it would not impact strategic initiatives such multi-year contracts or basic functions such as software and hardware maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>In enterprise software Gartner expects spending to reach $297 billion, up 6.4 percent this year compared with 3.5 percent growth in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a big jump in certain base functionalities around data,&#8221; Lovelock said.<\/p>\n<p>IT services, which can include outsourcing, maintenance or consulting, will see growth of 4.5 percent to $918 million versus 1.5 percent in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Worldwide devices spending &#8212; including PCs, tablets, mobile phones and printers &#8212; is forecast to reach $718 billion in 2013, up 7.9 percent from 2012<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite flat spending on PCs and a modest decline in spending on printers, a short-term boost to spending on premium mobile phones has driven an upward revision in the devices sector growth for 2013 from Gartner&#8217;s previous forecast of 6.3 percent,&#8221; the firm said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">More hardware news<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/71088-chromebook-pixel-vs-macbook-air.html\">Chromebook Pixel vs MacBook Air<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/70512-retina-macbook-macbook-air-price-drop.html\">Retina MacBook Pro, MacBook Air price drop<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/69168-combatting-computer-noise.html\">Combatting computer noise<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gartner has trimmed its tech spending outlook for 2013<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":340871,"featured_media":74399,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[36,5032,18837,5658],"class_list":["post-74395","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-technology","tag-active","tag-gartner","tag-spend","tag-tech"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/74395"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/340871"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=74395"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/74395\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":74407,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/74395\/revisions\/74407"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/74399"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=74395"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=74395"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=74395"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
