{"id":7525,"date":"2009-03-30T19:41:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-30T17:41:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-03-30T19:41:00","modified_gmt":"2009-03-30T17:41:00","slug":"vodacom-airtime-thief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/7525-vodacom-airtime-thief.html","title":{"rendered":"Vodacom airtime thief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A drug addict convicted of embezzling R120 000 from Vodacom was on Monday sentenced to two years house arrest at the Noupoort Christian Drug Rehabilitation Centre. <\/p>\n<p>Morne van Vuuren, 26, was also jailed for two years, but the sentence was suspended for five years on condition that he complete a two-year rehabilitation programme at Noupoort. <\/p>\n<p>Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court Magistrate Amrith Chabilall warned him he may not consume liquor or drugs, other than those prescribed by a doctor, during his period of house arrest. <\/p>\n<p>Van Vuuren also had to perform 16 hours a month community service in the form of cleaning and maintenance. <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor Simon Leope said Van Vuuren had been in the employ of the company ISIS (Pty) Ltd, and as such was part of a team that assisted Vodacom with IT technical support and maintenance. <\/p>\n<p>Vuuren had illegally accessed the Vodacom domain by dialling remotely into the Vodacom network with a PC, and had thus downloaded airtime to the value of R120 000 to 50 different pre-paid cellphones, and kept the money for himself. <\/p>\n<p>Van Vuuren used the R120 000 to support his drug addiction, Leope said. <\/p>\n<p>Van Vuuren pleaded guilty on 60 counts of fraud and two of violating legislation relating to the unauthorised access to, interception of, or interference with data. <\/p>\n<p>Chabilall disagreed with defence attorney Andrew Joyce, that Van Vuuren&#8217;s plea of guilty to the charges had been an indication of remorse. <\/p>\n<p>He said offenders often pleaded guilty simply because there was no other way out. <\/p>\n<p>By cheating Vodacom, Van Vuuren had &quot;bitten the hand that fed him&quot;, the magistrate said. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A drug addict convicted of embezzling R120 000 from Vodacom sent to rehab<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7525","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cellular"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7525"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7525"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7525\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7525"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7525"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7525"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
