Cell C<\/a> has lodged a successful complaint at the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA<\/a>) against 8ta<\/a>\u2019s claim of offering \u201cSouth Africa\u2019s lowest call rate\u201d.<\/p>\n

8ta\u2019s advertisement shows a pink ball with the words \u201c95c per minute\u201d; below this, the words \u201cSouth Africa\u2019s LOWEST Call Rate\u201d appear.<\/p>\n

Cell C said that its 99c per minute rate applies irrespective of whether you are a prepaid or contract customer. \u201cThis rate is the lowest barring any special packages or aggregates,\u201d said Cell C.<\/p>\n

Cell C argued that 8ta\u2019s prepaid call rate is actually R1.90 per minute \u2013 much higher than its 99c per minute. \u201c8ta does not offer a 95c per minute standard rate,\u201d said Cell C.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they do offer is a standard call rate of R1.90, but when one recharges, one\u2019s airtime is doubled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cell C argued that the average consumer would interpret 8ta\u2019s claim to mean \u201cwhere I pay 99c a minute for Cell C, I pay 95c a minute for 8ta\u201d.<\/p>\n

Cell C argued that 8ta\u2019s claim is, therefore, untrue and misleading.<\/p>\n

8ta argued that its commercial merely drew attention to the fact that it was possible to make a call for 95c per minute on 8ta, and that it was up to the customer to find out how this can be done.<\/p>\n

8ta said that it will make amendments to the heading \u201c95c per minute South Africa\u2019s lowest call rate\u201d, and that reference shall be made to the fact that R1.90 is the standard rate.<\/p>\n

The ASA accepted 8ta\u2019s commitment to change the advertisement, and therefore did not consider the matter.<\/p>\n
