According to insider sources<\/a> Microsoft has binned the previously publicised Office 14 name for its Office suite in favour of "Microsoft Office 2010".
 
Historically, Microsoft has named its products with forward-looking dates to make the new software appear up to date. In keeping with this the Office suite, which is due to become available later this year or early next year, will likely be branded as "Office 2010". <\/p>\n

More notably Office 2010 is also forecast to be delivered with a web-based set of online tools, similar to those in Google Docs, which will be available to use for free and will be supported by advertising.
 
In terms of the interface Office 2010 will only display subtle differences when compared with Office 2007 because the suite’s predecessor has already achieved much of the drastic overhaul and updating that Microsoft aimed for. The new Office Suite will instead boast improvements behind the scenes. <\/p>\n

Although there has been no official confirmation as yet, it does seem likely for Microsoft to take this route. Google’s growing dominance online is a thorn in the side of Microsoft because historically the company’s business model has relied on selling boxed software. This has however been seriously challenged by Google’s online applications and other competitors who have started to offer products for free, choosing instead to rely on advertising for revenue.
 
Microsoft is due, however, to use Office 2010 as a platform to launch its cloud computing bid in order to compete with Google. The suite will offer a set of web office applications which will essentially be slimmed down versions of Excel, Word, Outlook etc.
 
It is possible that boxed versions of the software may offer customers a year’s free subscription to an online Office service while online customers may have the opportunity to subscribe on a monthly basis. <\/p>\n
