Online security news source E Hacking News reported on Friday 17 May 2013 that the official website of South African Police Service (SAPS<\/a>) had been breached by the Anonymous<\/a> hacktivist using the name “DomainerAnon”.<\/p>\n

According to the hacker the reason for this security breach is to serve as a reminder to the government of the murder, by police, of 34 protesting miners outside the Marikana platinum mine.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo date no officers have been brought to justice … This situation will not be tolerated,\u201d the hacker said on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cA message to SAP: You are responsible for the data you hold … we have merely shown that you do not live up to your own Code of Conduct,\u201d DomainerAnon said on Tuesday 22 May on Twitter.<\/p>\n

According to an ENCA report private details of hundreds of whistle blowers were exposed in the data dump which followed the hacking.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe identities of nearly 16,000 South Africans, who lodged a complaint with police on their website, provided tip-offs or reported crimes, are now publicly available,\u201d the ENCA report states.<\/p>\n

\u201cDetails that are compromised include telephone numbers, email addresses and identity numbers of over 15,700 people who used the website from 2005 to this year. Also included are the usernames and passwords of some 40 SAPS members.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to ENCA<\/a>, the police spokesperson Phuti Setati first denied any security breach, but after being furnished with the evidence said that \u201cwe would like to reserve comment on the matter at the moment.”<\/p>\n
