Point Topic<\/a> released its latest broadband tariff report, showing that the average cost per megabit for business and residential broadband services declined significantly in the beginning of 2013.<\/p>\n

Point Topic looks at trends in the global and regional monthly costs of copper, cable, and fibre broadband services on a quarterly basis.<\/p>\n

The analysis is based on their global database of standalone and bundled broadband tariffs.<\/p>\n

In Q1 2013, the Point-Topic database included 2,889 residential tariffs from across the globe and 2,310 business tariffs, with 51 tariffs targeted at both groups.<\/p>\n

All prices are quoted in US dollars at international PPP (purchasing power parity) rates to allow comparisons between countries.<\/p>\n

Residential cost per Mbps<\/p><\/div>\n

The average cost per megabit for residential copper or DSL broadband services is significantly higher than fibre or cable services and has been for some time.<\/p>\n

However, the average cost per megabit for copper services continues to plummet, due to a relatively modest increase in the downstream speeds offered by services.<\/p>\n

Since Q2 2010, the average cost per megabit for residential cable services has been declining steadily, although it has remained relatively stable since Q2 2012.<\/p>\n

The average cost per megabit for residential fibre services has remained relatively stable since Q21 2011. The global trends in DSL have been much more erratic over the same period.<\/p>\n

DSL is the slowest broadband service, offering on average speeds of 12.5Mbps to global users in Q1 2013.<\/p>\n

The average cost per megabit for broadband services through DSL, cable, and fibre are much more closely matched for business tariffs.<\/p>\n

Here cable offers the best cost given the speeds business users can expect \u2013 for residents fibre is the most cost effective.<\/p>\n

The cost per megabit for cable business broadband services has been declining over time. Fibre shows a more erratic pattern.<\/p>\n
