The new solid ink high-speed office printer developed by scientists at the Norwalk, Connecticut-based firm helps reduce color page costs by up to 62%, Xerox said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Xerox said the new technology will help make color printing considerably more affordable. Color printing tends to be about four times more expensive per page than black and white.<\/p>\n
The company said the new technology is featured in the Xerox ColorQube 9200 Series multifunction office printer.<\/p>\n
Xerox said a print head increases ink flow 400% through the use of 880 microscopic nozzles, each one half the width of a human hair.<\/p>\n
It said the print head funnels molten solid ink through a network of channels to the nozzles, enabling color printing at 85 pages per minute.<\/p>\n
“This device opens up a huge market for Xerox,” said Don Titterington, Xerox vice president for print head and ink research and development.<\/p>\n
“At 150 million drops per second, this is a breakthrough in how fast we can put ink on the page. That’s as many ink drops in a minute as there are people on the planet.”<\/p>\n
Xerox also said the new technology does away with messy and expensive cartridges and toner.<\/p>\n
The ink is solid at room temperature and melts inside the printer, it said.<\/p>\n
The new printer can be ordered this year in the United States and Europe and in other markets in 2010.<\/p>\n
