{"id":8347,"date":"2009-06-09T01:38:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-08T23:38:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-06-09T01:38:00","modified_gmt":"2009-06-08T23:38:00","slug":"open-spectrum-alliance-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/8347-open-spectrum-alliance-launched.html","title":{"rendered":"Open Spectrum Alliance launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openspectrum.org.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">Open Spectrum Alliance<\/a> (OSA), a new group working towards greater efficiency in the allocation, assignment and use of radio frequency spectrum in South Africa, will hold its first meeting in Stellenbosch tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>According to the OSA policy regulating the use of wireless spectrum has not kept pace with the evolution of wireless technology.&nbsp; &ldquo;In the same way Internet IP address assignment has evolved to be more efficient, we need a new way of thinking about spectrum assignment models,&rdquo; the OSA states in its manifesto.<\/p>\n<p>The OSA says that access to spectrum in South Africa represents the single biggest obstacle to competitive participation in the telecoms marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>To improve the current regime regarding spectrum allocation and usage, the OSA encourages amoung other things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Transparency around the existing use and proposed allocation and assignment of spectrum in South Africa<\/li>\n<li>Interference free spectrum, efficiency shared to reduce barriers to entry<\/li>\n<li>Technology neutral spectrum allocation<\/li>\n<li>Use it or lose it policy<\/li>\n<li>Innovative spectrum licensing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The first OSA meeting will be on the 10th of June 2009 in Stellenbosch.&nbsp; Speakers will include Steve Song from the Shuttleworth Foundation, WAPA Regulatory Advisor Dominic Cull and Ronnie Seeber from Motorola.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=175654\">Open Spectrum Alliance<\/a><\/strong> discussion<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New group aims for progressive and efficient frequency spectrum management in SA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8347","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-telecoms"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8347"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8347"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8347\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8347"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8347"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8347"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
