Telkom announced on Monday that it has filed for a 1.7% tariff adjustment with the regulator – the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).  This increase, the fixed line provider said, is well below the overall increase permitted by the Regulator’s Price Control Formula.<\/p>\n

For the second year running Telkom has opted to leave ADSL prices unchanged despite increasing competition in the broadband market.  The company did however say that they will bump up the usage limits of TelkomInternet all access 2GB and 3GB subscribers to 3GB and 5GB respectively.<\/p>\n

This increases the value proposition of the company’s broadband offering slightly, but it may not be adequate to ensure that the fixed-line provider achieves its self-proclaimed goal of being “known as the leading broadband provider in South Africa”.<\/p>\n

The following table provides an overview of how Telkom’s ‘new’ prices compare with other broadband services in the market.  For Telkom’s ADSL service the total cost of an ADSL service was used, this basket includes analogue line rental, ADSL access charges and ISP bandwidth costs.  The new analogue line rental of R 131.03 was used for this calculation.<\/p>\n
