Ellies, the JSE-listed electronics distributor, has unveiled its new consumer centric arm \u2013 Ellies Connect \u2013 which will position the company in the satellite broadband and free-to-air TV space.<\/p>\n
Ellies Connect comprises three different, but converged elements namely: entertainment, hardware and connectivity.<\/p>\n
Through partnerships with Skyevine, a satellite service provider, and iBurst, Ellies Connect offers satellite broadband to consumers as an alternative to 3G and ADSL, providing connectivity to the Internet anywhere in the country.<\/p>\n
Satellite broadband beams the Internet from a satellite to a dish installed at the subscriber\u2019s home. It delivers speeds of 10 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream \u2013 about 39 times faster than a normal dial-up service, Ellies said.<\/p>\n
It said that, through its partnership with iBurst, Ellies Connect users will be able to access fast internet, Fax 2 Email, iSMS starter, and a Voice Line Service, allowing users to make and receive calls from their computer or from a dedicated voice-over-internet telephone.<\/p>\n
Ellies said that its new company will \u201cshortly\u201d be able to offer consumers entertainment components including Digital Terrestrial Television, (DTT) and Platco, a new digital TV-to-home offering.<\/p>\n
OpenView HD is a new free-to-air satellite TV broadcaster that is scheduled to launch in South Africa during October 2013.<\/p>\n
