{"id":8567,"date":"2009-06-26T16:15:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-26T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-06-26T16:15:00","modified_gmt":"2009-06-26T14:15:00","slug":"fibre-to-the-home-report-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/8567-fibre-to-the-home-report-explained.html","title":{"rendered":"Fibre to the Home report explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itweb.co.za\/sections\/internet\/2009\/0906261155.asp?A=BRO&amp;S=broadband&amp;O=FPLEAD\" target=\"_blank\">recent media report<\/a> suggested that Dark Fibre Africa (DFA) will &lsquo;bring fibre to the home&rsquo; to customers, and that &lsquo;true broadband speeds of 100Mb\/s to the home are fast becoming a reality&rsquo;.&nbsp; Some readers may think that DFA is planning a fibre to the home service, something which is not on the cards from the company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>DFA manager for sales and marketing, Malcolm Kirby, told MyBroadband that DFA is not planning to roll out any fibre infrastructure to residential properties, and that it is definitely not a service provider.&nbsp; The closest DFA&rsquo;s infrastructure will get to a residential property is the entrance of a gated community, Kirby explained.<\/p>\n<p>Kirby added that DFA is focused on providing service providers with point-to-point fibre links, which can in turn be used by these providers as a backbone network to support their own last mile access technologies.&nbsp; DFA does not own or need an ECNS or ECS license, which reiterates their role as a telecoms infrastructure provider rather than services provider and clearly demarcates their area of expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Kirby said that DFA carefully planned their route to pass most large enterprises, and that the 2 000 potential customers which were identified are typically large businesses and service providers.&nbsp; DFA specifically selected areas where it expects multiple service providers to purchase infrastructure from the company, something which will definitely not happen in the case of a single residential property.<\/p>\n<p>While some residential consumers may be disappointed to learn that DFA is not planning a fibre to the home service, the additional inner city fibre infrastructure is likely to bring more competition to the market which will in turn drive down bandwidth pricing.<\/p>\n<p>Further good news is that Dark Fibre Africa (DFA) recently announced the formal launch of its network which means that service providers can start to take advantage of the company&rsquo;s 800 km fibre network.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=178419\"><strong>DFA and fibre&nbsp;discussion<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dark Fibre Africa was recently said to bring 100 Mbps \u2018fibre to the home\u2019 services to consumers.
