This is word from South Africa\u2019s top Internet service providers (ISPs).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MWEB\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226947-MWeb\">MWEB<\/a> revolutionized the ADSL market in March 2010 when it launched South Africa\u2019s first affordable uncapped services.<\/p>\n<p>Since then a large portion of South Africa\u2019s ADSL subscribers moved to uncapped accounts, but capped services remain a popular choice in some environments.<\/p>\n<p>Capped services can bring cost savings for low monthly usage, and is also seen as offering a better network performance than uncapped products.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband asked South Africa\u2019s largest ISPs whether their capped ADSL products really offers a superior performance.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Afrihost director Greg Payne<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_80939\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Greg-Payne-Afrihost.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80939\" class=\"size-full wp-image-80939\" alt=\"Greg Payne\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Greg-Payne-Afrihost.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Greg-Payne-Afrihost.png 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Greg-Payne-Afrihost-250x166.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-80939\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greg Payne<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Afrihost\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/307435-Afrihost\">Afrihost<\/a> director <a title=\"Greg Payne\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226249-Greg-Payne\">Greg Payne<\/a> said that their capped packages are never shaped and never throttled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn our capped ADSL products you will always get the full speed that your ADSL line and exchange is capable of,\u201d said Payne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur uncapped service is never throttled, but may be shaped during peak network times to ensure that capped and business users have full speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Payne said that their shaping involves slowing down non-real-time protocols like torrents during peak network times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving said that, Afrihost has recently upgraded its network significantly, so shaping has mainly been taking place for only 4 hours a day &#8211; between 8pm and midnight,\u201d said Payne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfrihost&#8217;s Business Uncapped packages have been completely unshaped and un-throttled for a number of months now and we will continue to run Business Uncapped like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Axxess director Franco Barbalich<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_81219\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Franco-Barbalich-axxess.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81219\" class=\"size-full wp-image-81219\" alt=\"Franco Barbalich\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Franco-Barbalich-axxess.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Franco-Barbalich-axxess.png 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Franco-Barbalich-axxess-250x166.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-81219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Franco Barbalich<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Axxess\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/224907-Axxess\">Axxess<\/a> director <a title=\"Franco Barbalich\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/301321-Franco-Barbalich\">Franco Barbalich<\/a> said that their capped accounts are not shaped or throttled in any way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn uncapped, Axxess only manages the users\u2019 real time traffic, depending on network availability,\u201d said Barbalich.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe choice between capped and uncapped ADSL depends on what you want to spend, or if you want to actively manage the number of gigs you want to use. in the case of data it is latency, packet loss and redundancy &#8211; as we believe a high quality service will benefit our customers and Vox over the long term,\u201d said Reed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we cannot guarantee this quality due to unknown demand from cheap uncapped offerings we prefer resell other Telco&#8217;s products rather to impact our network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed said that they developed their \u201cFat Pipe\u201d usage based solutions to cater for the bigger ADSL line sizes because the uncapped products based on line size become prohibitive for householders and small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost high-end consumers prefer the biggest pipe possible but only require 50 to 100 GBs a month, hence the trend back to usage models,\u201d said Reed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur objectives with all the Consumer Broadband solutions, including Satellite is to provide a decent sized high performance solution under the R600 per month all in price point.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">MWEB ISP CEO Derek Hershaw<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_78925\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Derek-Hershaw-Mweb.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78925\" class=\"size-full wp-image-78925\" alt=\"Derek Hershaw Mweb\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Derek-Hershaw-Mweb.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Derek-Hershaw-Mweb.png 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Derek-Hershaw-Mweb-250x166.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-78925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Derek Hershaw<\/p><\/div>\n<p>MWEB ISP CEO <a title=\"Derek Hershaw\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226207-Derek-Hershaw\">Derek Hershaw<\/a> said that their capped products provide excellent performance for all types of internet usage, and are designed for the user who wants an optimum network experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur capped products have the least amount of shaping and bandwidth management across the shaped range and are best suited to users who value performance over volume of data.
