{"id":8689,"date":"2009-07-07T15:33:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-07T13:33:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-07-07T15:33:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-07T13:33:00","slug":"telkom-wimax-freeze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/8689-telkom-wimax-freeze.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom WiMax freeze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom became the first South African telecoms operator to launch <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/forumdisplay.php?f=156\">WiMax<\/a> when it rolled out its <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/Broadband\/331.html\">802.16d (fixed WiMax) offerings in June 2007<\/a>.&nbsp; The service was mainly aimed at complimenting its existing ADSL products by expanding Telkom&rsquo;s broadband footprint.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Customers who apply for DSL will be offered Do Broadband Wireless if they reside in an area which is not DSL enabled and that falls within the coverage area of a WiMax base station,&rdquo; Telkom said.<\/p>\n<p>Recent consumer feedback however suggested that Telkom is not accepting new WiMax orders.&nbsp; According to one MyBroadband forum member he was told that Telkom&rsquo;s WiMax suppliers are not supplying them with equipment, something which facilitated the freeze on new orders.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom however denied that a shortage of WiMax equipment is behind the freeze on new orders, saying that it is currently reviewing all possible options with regard to WiMax technology.&nbsp; &ldquo;During this process, due to be completed shortly, it is possible that no new customers will be added to our network in some areas,&rdquo; said Ajith Bridgraj, Telkom&#8217;s Senior Specialist for Media Relations.<br \/><strong><br \/>Slow WiMax uptake in South Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite the hype that surrounds WiMax, the technology has not had a significant impact on the South African market yet.&nbsp; Telkom, Neotel, iBurst\/Vodacom and Screamer Telecoms have all rolled out WiMax networks, but to date WiMax users do not constitute a significant portion of the local broadband community.<\/p>\n<p>According to an industry source the <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/Telecoms\/3339.html\">iBurst\/Vodacom WiMax<\/a> network has nearly no subscribers on it, something which is raising questions about Vodacom&rsquo;s multi-million Rand investment in a national 802.16e (mobile)WiMax network.<\/p>\n<p>Screamer Telecoms, which is using spectrum from Sentech for its WiMax needs, has rolled out an 802.16d WiMax access network &lsquo;in the more heavily populated areas of SA&rsquo;, offering broadband and voice services to consumers.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/Wireless\/7038.html\">According to Screamer Telecoms<\/a> subscriber growth has been encouraging.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/Wireless\/4441.html\">Neotel<\/a> has not launched commercial WiMax-based broadband offerings yet, but according to a source the company is working on a fixed-WiMax service aimed at the high-end consumer and small business market.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=180309\">Telkom WiMax freeze<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; give your views<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom reviewing its WiMax strategy, resulting in a WiMax freeze in some areas<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8689","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-wireless"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8689"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8689"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8689\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8689"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8689"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8689"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
