The widespread use of the Internet and the growth of broadband in South Africa have made owning a website an essential part of many businesses.  There is also an increase in the number of personal websites, typically blogs using a CMS like WordPress to power the website.<\/p>\n

It is well known that hosting a website locally can be far more costly than opting for an offshore option – mainly because of the high cost of bandwidth in the country.   The local hosting market is however fiercely competitive which means that basic hosting costs have become very affordable.  <\/p>\n

We take a look at the hosting costs from a few of the most prominent hosting providers in South Africa.  While Telkom may not be particularly successful in the personal hosting space, we included the company as a means of benchmarking the pricing from the other players.<\/p>\n

The following table provides a basic comparison based on some of the most important factors when selecting a hosting package:  operating system, disk space allowance, monthly traffic allowance, database support, setup costs, over usage costs and monthly price.<\/p>\n
