This is according to a well-placed industry player.

MTN, Internet Solutions and Telkom are known for not agreeing to settlement-free peering with smaller players. This means that smaller ISPs have to purchase local transit from these larger operators.

This means that many ADSL subscribers, which are often served by smaller ISPs, can be affected by congested peering links. This, according to the industry source, is exactly what is currently happening.

MyBroadband has been provided with network analysis which points to peering link issues between Telkom and MTN, and Telkom and Internet Solutions. According to the information, Telkom has been notified about the problem.

“MTN and Internet Solutions are most likely doing battle with Telkom, and it is affecting ADSL subscribers,” the industry source said.

“We have clients on Internet Solutions’ network, and it looks like the link is saturated from Telkom to IS, but is not saturated from IS to Telkom. This may show that IS is not fulfilling their obligation to upgrade their link as required,” he said.

He added that allowing peering links to become congested is completely anti-competitive when viewed from the point of an ADSL supplier.

Internet Solutions denied that there is any congestion on their peering links. “We are not experiencing any issues on the Telkom peering links,” said Sean Nourse, executive for connectivity services at IS.

Telkom and MTN did not respond to requests for information about congestion on their peering links.

More on ADSL exchange congestion

How to test for ADSL exchange congestion

ADSL network congestion a problem: MWEB CEO

ADSL network congestion concerns

Peering congestion between Telkom and MTN/Internet Solutions is affecting the performance of ADSL subscribers, says an industry player

[5
71,35,391,42,109
post-87629","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-adsl","tag-adsl-2","tag-headline","tag-internet-solutions","tag-mtn","tag-telkom
