{"id":8980,"date":"2009-07-29T00:05:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-28T22:05:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-07-29T00:05:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-28T22:05:00","slug":"wimax-spectrum-conundrum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/8980-wimax-spectrum-conundrum.html","title":{"rendered":"WiMax spectrum conundrum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Screamer Telecoms is well known in the broadband and wireless community as a WiMax network operator providing consumers with broadband and telephony services.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>According to Screamer Telecoms they &ldquo;control and manage one of the world&#8217;s biggest independent wireless telecommunications networks, with more than 350 high-sites around South Africa.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The company boasts coverage of 134 000 square kilometers using both WiMax and WiFi technology, and offers consumers both capped and uncapped broadband services.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our Transmission Network is primarily Microwave with built in redundancy and automatic alternate routing. Our access network in the more heavily populated areas of SA is a WiMAX one and in the sparsely populated areas we use WiFi,&rdquo; Screamer Telecoms says on its website.<\/p>\n<p>Questions have been raised about the wireless operator&rsquo;s access to WiMax spectrum.&nbsp; It is speculated that Screamer Telecoms is using Sentech&rsquo;s 2.5 GHz WiMax spectrum, but the company would not confirm or deny this rumour.<\/p>\n<p>When questioned about the company&rsquo;s WiMax spectrum Screamer Telecoms CEO Gavin Hart said that he was not at liberty to comment on any arrangement Screamer Telecoms may or may not have with Sentech.&nbsp; Hart however promised that &ldquo;a comprehensive statement would be released on MyBroadband within the next sixty days.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sentech was however very direct when asked about Screamer Telecoms, categorically denying that it has any relationship with the company.&nbsp; &ldquo;Sentech does not have any relationship with Screamer Telecoms.&nbsp; Sentech is not aware if Screamer Telecoms is using its broadband spectrum, if so it is illegal,&rdquo; said Sentech&rsquo;s Head of Corporate Communications, Polly Modiko.<\/p>\n<p>The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) was asked for comment regarding the potential use of Sentech&rsquo;s WiMax spectrum by another company, but the regulator did not provide feedback by the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=184406\">Screamer Telecoms WiMax<\/a><\/strong> discussion<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Industry players at odds about the legality of Screamer Telecoms\u2019 WiMax network<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8980","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-wireless"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8980"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8980"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8980\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8980"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8980"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8980"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
