Telkom Mobile<\/a> informed Sim-Sonke subscribers earlier in October 2013 that they would be able to make calls \u201canywhere in Mzansi\u201d.<\/p>\n

The change was motivated in part by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa\u2019s (Icasa<\/a>) decision to reduce interconnect fees, Telkom Mobile said in a statement issued on 28 October 2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe move by the regulator helped make it possible to offer Sim-Sonke nationwide,\u201d Kagiso Moncho<\/a>, commercial product development executive at Telkom Mobile was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy lowering the price barrier to entry and now making it available nationwide, we hope to see more people benefitting from the connectivity that mobile technology provides,\u201d Moncho said.<\/p>\n

Telkom Mobile has a roaming agreement in place with MTN<\/a>, which allows its customers to use the MTN network when outside the coverage of Telkom Mobile\u2019s network.<\/p>\n

However, when Sim-Sonke launched during July 2013 it traded off the ability to roam on MTN with 29c\/minute on-network and 75c\/minute off-network voice call tariffs.<\/p>\n

With Sim-Sonke gaining the ability to roam on MTN\u2019s network, this trade-off is no longer necessary for subscribers.<\/p>\n
