{"id":9050,"date":"2009-08-03T16:35:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-03T14:35:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-08-03T16:35:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-03T14:35:00","slug":"cyborg-walkers-stride-towards-robotics-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/9050-cyborg-walkers-stride-towards-robotics-future.html","title":{"rendered":"Cyborg-walkers stride towards robotics future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two men and a woman, wearing what looked like white plastic exoskeletons over black outfits, were testing &#8211; at a pace of 1.8km an hour &#8211; robotic suits designed to give mobility to the injured and disabled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What on earth is it?&#8221; asked Hisako Ueda, 43, digital camera in hand, as she and her 10-year-old daughter Ayaka gazed at the trio striding through Akihabara district, a high-tech geeks&#8217; paradise also called Electric Town.<\/p>\n<p>Undeterred by the onlookers&#8217; stares, the three completed their mechanically assisted trek by train, taxi and on foot from the suburb of Tsukuba, 50km north of central Tokyo, to the robo-meeting.<\/p>\n<p>One of the three robotics company employees, 32-year-old Takatoshi Hisano, said the futuristic 11kg &#8211; which can detect and preempt its user&#8217;s movements &#8211; made the two-hour commute that much<br \/>easier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not tired at all,&#8221; he said with a smile when they arrived at the building where the robotics industry meeting was about to start in a fourth-floor room. &#8220;Let&#8217;s take the stairs instead of the lift.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The high-tech suits were developed by Yoshiyuki Sankai, a professor at Tsukuba University, whose company is already leasing them to several hospitals and nursing homes and has just received an order from Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, the three were greeted by assorted robots &#8211; including Toyota&#8217;s personal transport assistance robot &#8220;Winglet&#8221; and Fuji Heavy Industries&#8217; automatic floor cleaning machine &#8211; alongside plenty of humans with high hopes of turning the sector into the new face of Japan Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Japan has launched a five-year project of putting so-called people-assisting robots into widespread practical use, the government-backed New Energy and Industrial Technology Organisation (NEDO) said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe that the robotics industry in this people-assisting field will expand one hundredfold,&#8221; said NEDO senior official Katsuya Okano. &#8220;But for this goal, what&#8217;s lacking is a safety standard, which we aim to set up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A government survey in Japan, now a fast ageing society, estimates that the global market for such robots, including nurses and domestic maids, will expand to 6.2 trillion yen ($65 billion) by 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=185188\"><strong>Robotic suits discussion<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three Japanese cyborg look-alikes turned heads on busy Tokyo streets and subway trains on Monday as they made their way to a robotics conference on a hot summer&#039;s day &#8211; without breaking a sweat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9050","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-hardware"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9050"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9050"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9050\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9050"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9050"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9050"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
