{"id":91387,"date":"2013-11-11T22:39:54","date_gmt":"2013-11-11T20:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=91387"},"modified":"2013-11-12T08:37:14","modified_gmt":"2013-11-12T06:37:14","slug":"uncapped-adsl-quality-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/91387-uncapped-adsl-quality-concerns.html","title":{"rendered":"Uncapped ADSL quality concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227037-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> started its free <a title=\"ADSL\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/224881-ADSL\">ADSL<\/a> speed upgrades on 11 November 2013 \u2013 doubling the speeds of 1Mbps and 2Mbps users, and bumping up 4Mbps users to 10Mbps.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Axxess\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/224907-Axxess\">Axxess<\/a> and Telkom Internet have already announced that they will upgrade their uncapped ADSL subscribers to the higher speeds free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are under pressure to follow suit, but without substantial IP Connect price cuts this is challenging. IP Connect is the wholesale ADSL product from Telkom.<\/p>\n<p>On 1 October 2013 <a title=\"Telkom IPC capacity increase\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/84281-telkom-adsl-ipc-boost-announced.html\"><strong>Telkom increased IPC capacity by 5% for free<\/strong><\/a>. On 17 October it <a title=\"Telkom IPC price cuts\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/87236-new-telkom-adsl-ipc-price-cuts-announced.html\"><strong>reduced the effective tariff prices of IP Connect by 8%<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This equates to an effective price cut of 12.4% &#8211; not enough, argue some ISPs, to double the speed of uncapped ADSL accounts for free without compromising service levels.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">ISPs explain their uncapped ADSL speed upgrade challenge<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Afrihost\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/307435-Afrihost\">Afrihost<\/a> director <a title=\"Greg Payne\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/301349-Greg-Payne\">Greg Payne<\/a><\/strong> said that they cannot double their uncapped ADSL speeds, keep service levels the same, and still make a profit with the current high IPC prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t plan on dropping quality, so our margins &#8211; which are already extremely thin &#8211; are at risk here,\u201d said Payne.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Cybersmart\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226185-Cybersmart\">Cybersmart<\/a> CEO <a title=\"Laurie Fialkov\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/278903-Laurie-Fialkov\">Laurie Fialkov<\/a><\/strong> explained that if they want to double the speed, and still offer the same contention ratio, they need to also double their IPC capacity.<\/p>\n<p>With an IPC price reduction of only 12.4%, it means that doubling capacity will come at a significant cost to an ISP. This means something has got to give.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Who pays for the extra 80% shortfall?&#8221; asked Fialkov. &#8220;It certainly does not come from the 13% discount from Telkom,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"MWEB\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226947-MWeb\">MWEB<\/a> ISP CEO <a title=\"Derek Hershaw\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226207-Derek-Hershaw\">Derek Hershaw<\/a><\/strong> said that to match Telkom&#8217;s retail offering, ISPs are going to be forced to buy a lot more IPC capacity from Telkom Wholesale.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A classic case of margin squeeze clearly calculated to erode competition in the market place.
