{"id":9182,"date":"2009-08-13T13:07:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-13T11:07:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-08-13T13:07:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-13T11:07:00","slug":"google-goes-social","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/9182-google-goes-social.html","title":{"rendered":"Google goes social"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Internet giant announced the US debuts on iGoogle of 19 community-oriented mini-programs including chess and trivia game play and firing off updates about one&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Social gadgets let you share, collaborate and play games with your friends on top of all the things you can already do on your homepage,&#8221; Google vice president of search products and user experience Marissa Mayer and iGoogle product manager Rose Yao said in a joint message posted online.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your friends are able to see what you share or do in your social gadgets either by having the same gadgets on their homepages, or through a new feed called Updates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>People using iGoogle can create a &#8220;Friends&#8221; group to designate who they want to share digital data with.<\/p>\n<p>The iGoogle social gadgets were launched recently in Australia and are being rolled out in the United States, according to Mayer and Yao.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Google homepage has always been a place that connects people to information, and we&#8217;re excited to now also be a place that connects people to each other,&#8221; the executives said in their message.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope these social gadgets make iGoogle an even more fun and personal homepage for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are more than 60 000 mini-applications in a gadget directory that can be used to customise iGoogle homepages with hip, playful, or functional programs, according to the California-based Internet goliath.<\/p>\n<p>The addition of social gadgets comes as Google competes for people&#8217;s online time with social-networking services Facebook and MySpace and microblogging sensation Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=186757\"><strong>Google social-networking features<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; give your views<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google on Wednesday added social-networking features to its customizable homepages by adding software &quot;gadgets&quot; that enable people to play and stay in tune with friends online. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9182","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-internet"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9182"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9182"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9182\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9182"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9182"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9182"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
