Telkom workers have been instructed to go back to work on Monday after the Communication Worker’s Union (CWU) and the telecommunication provider reached an agreement, the union said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
“Workers should go back to work on Monday since we have reached an agreement with Telkom,” CWU spokesman Pheane Ramoadi said.<\/p>\n
“The principal issues have been agreed upon and that is what motivates the calling off of the strike.”<\/p>\n
Many Telkom workers have been on strike since August 3, demanding a 13 percent wage increase and the adjustment of what they perceive as “racially classified” salary grades.<\/p>\n
“The CWU member’s determination broke the backbone of Telkom and forced the employer to make positive adjustments to the salary increment offer at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration yesterday [Friday],” said Gallant Rodgers, CWU general secretary.<\/p>\n
Their campaign has included a march from the Union Buildings on Wednesday and picketing outside the CCMA in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n
According to the CWU workers will receive a 7.5 percent salary increment, back dated to April 1.<\/p>\n
