The results of a new study have shown that Cell C<\/a> has regained some of the subscribers it lost between 2010 and 2012, mainly at the expense of MTN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is according to World Wide Worx<\/a> and Dashboard, who conducted the research with the backing of First National Bank<\/a> for its Mobility 2014<\/em> study.<\/p>\n

The companies found that the number of people who say they use Cell C as their primary cellular provider had increased between 2012 and 2013, with both MTN and Vodacom<\/a> showing declines.<\/p>\n

However, the number of people who said they use MTN as a secondary cellular account dropped off tremendously (from 38% to 22%), while Cell C, Telkom Mobile<\/a>, Virgin Mobile<\/a>, and Vodacom all showed increases.<\/p>\n

Unveiling the results at an event towards the end of November 2013, Dashboard\u2019s Peter Searll<\/a> reported that 13% of respondents said they had more than one account. This was up slightly from the previous year\u2019s 11%.<\/p>\n

Searll explained that they interviewed people from all over South Africa aged 16 and older, with 800 people from urban areas surveyed and 400 from rural areas.<\/p>\n

According to their results, MTN and Vodacom are neck-and-neck for the most popular primary cellular network in South Africa.<\/p>\n

A breakdown of the results, including the percentage of users from urban and rural areas who said they use a particular network, is shown in the below graph.<\/p>\n
