Four men, including a security guard, were arrested for allegedly stealing copper cable at Transnet’s warehouse in Germiston, east of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The men, aged between 23 and 45, were allegedly caught stealing two 500 metre spools of copper cable on Sunday, spokesman Wilfred Kgasago said.<\/p>\n
Three of the men threatened the security guards with a 9mm pistol and robbed them of a firearm before locking them in a toilet inside the warehouse, Kgasago said.<\/p>\n
“The police followed up on information of this planned robbery obtained on Friday… from a reliable source,” he said.<\/p>\n
The men were caught as they were loading the second spool of the copper cable onto their truck.<\/p>\n
“The value of each 500 metre roll is estimated at R170,000,” Kgasago said.<\/p>\n
One of the security guards at the Transnet Driehoek warehouse was also arrested for allegedly planning the robbery.<\/p>\n
A blue Mercedes-Benz truck, a pump-action shotgun, and a 9mm pistol were also seized.<\/p>\n
All four men were charged with armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as malicious damage to property.<\/p>\n
They were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
