With the release of any updated hardware, it can be valuable to revisit old features as new ones are touted, particularly for those considering buying the newly updated slimmer PlayStation 3 (PS3). Since its launch, the PS3 has positioned itself as a media hub as well as a gaming console to be reckoned with. However, with a little bit of tweaking and some dedication, the PS3 can serve as a useful online hub as well.<\/p>\n
The first port of entry for any PS3 is, of course, the PlayStation network (PSN). After connecting an Ethernet cable to a home network, and signing up for a PSN account, the basic online experience of the PS3 becomes accessible. Fortunately, and unlike Microsoft’s Xbox live, online gaming over the PlayStation Network is available in South Africa using one’s local address. A credit card is only required if you intend buying and downloading games or other media.<\/p>\n
While the comfort of the Sixaxis controller is one of the PS3’s stronger features for gaming, it is not the ideal way to enter text when browsing the internet using the built in web browser. However, connecting a USB or wireless keyboard to the PS3 works well, allowing for a far smoother browsing and social experience from the comfort of one’s couch.<\/p>\n
The PS3, along with the PlayStation Eye or a webcam, can make a nifty video conferencing centre as well. Sending multiple messages – for example to organize a braai or party with other friends – can be accomplished using the message function on the PS3 instead of email.<\/p>\n
Pairing up a PSP with PS3 can extend the usefulness of both devices. The PSP can be configured to act as a limited remote control for the PS3, and as a receiver for media being streamed from the PS3 to the PSP.<\/p>\n
While it is doubtful that a PS3 would ever replace a PC or laptop for online browsing, one cannot argue with the fact that its online features are available locally, with no subscription costs involved for out of the box services.<\/p>\n
