Neotel<\/a> said in a press release issued on Wednesday, 22 January 2014 that it has invested significantly to reduce network latency between South Africa and the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) countries.<\/p>\n

According to Abid Qadiri<\/a>, chief of business solutions and excellence at Neotel, the operator is the only telecommunications company in South Africa that has capacity on all five undersea cables.<\/p>\n

This provides for redundancy as well as for optimal routing to various parts of the globe, Qadiri said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always route traffic via the shortest path so that customers communicating with India can run traffic over the South Far East (SAFE<\/a>) cable directly into Mumbai,\u201d Qadiri said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis reduces the distance that packets need to travel, which differs from many other ISPs in the South African market that route all traffic via Europe in order to communicate with the rest of the world,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Routing over the shortest link helps reduce latency, which Neotel explained is the amount time it takes for a packet of data to get from one point to another.<\/p>\n

\u201cLatency in communications affects businesses in many ways depending on their needs, which can vary from voice, messaging, fax, streaming video, online commerce and so forth,” Qadiri said.<\/p>\n

“Improvements in latency allows applications to run better, faster and smoother than before.”<\/p>\n

Qadiri said that latency between South Africa and China on Neotel\u2019s network, which is in the range of 220 milliseconds, is now the best in the market.<\/p>\n

Neotel has also reduced latency to India, Qadiri said, which he noted was already the best in the market.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is certainly no doubt that improving latency and providing reliable communication routes between South Africa and BRICS countries can go a long way to bolster trade and further drive economic growth,\u201d Qadiri said.<\/p>\n
