{"id":9551,"date":"2009-09-10T08:41:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-10T06:41:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-09-10T08:41:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-10T06:41:00","slug":"telkom-ponders-its-mobile-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/9551-telkom-ponders-its-mobile-strategy.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom ponders its mobile strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Communications Minister, General Siphiwe Nyanda, Telkom&#8217;s discussions about how it can be involved in mobile telephony are at a sensitive stage.<\/p>\n<p>As a result the company is declining to provide any information about its mobile strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The minister, giving a written answer to ANC MP Sikhumbuzo Kholwane on Wednesday, said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Telkom, as a listed company, operates under regulations that require that any price sensitive information, which would include its mobile strategy, should be released to shareholders in an equitable basis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;Any public statements at this stage can compromise the company&#8217;s competitive and negotiating positions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nyanda explained that the rationale of the transaction to sell part of its Vodacom stake was in the restricted nature of the shareholders&#8217; agreement between Telkom and Vodafone.<\/p>\n<p>This agreement prevented Telkom from providing mobile telephony, not only in South Africa, but also providing a competing business south of the Equator.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom, in terms of the agreement, was however free to enter the fixed telecommunications market.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If one also takes into consideration the ongoing erosion from fixed line telephony to mobile telephony, the damaging consequences of staying invested in Vodacom becomes clear,&#8221; Nyanda said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The freedom from the restrictive shareholders agreement gave Telkom the ability to now deliver its own mobile capability in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom has also made it clear that it regards the acquiring of a mobile capability as integral to its growth strategy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=191273\"><strong>Telkom Mobile Strategy<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; comments and views<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Communications Minister says Telkom&#039;s discussions about its mobile telephony plans are at a sensitive stage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9551","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cellular"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9551"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9551"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9551\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9551"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9551"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9551"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
